“Hey, hey!” boomed a voice from was much too close and much too sudden. “This is amazing! Man, I’ve always wanted an owl familiar. They’re so cool!”

Keiji froze.

He… he knew that voice.

No. No, that’s not right. He’d never heard it directly—not exactly—but there was no mistaking who it belonged to.

Keiji looked up from his position on his hands and knees.

Leaning over him, blinking owlishly even though Keiji was the fucking owl, were a pair of giant, golden eyes.

The eyes pulled back, revealing a tall, broad figure hovering over him. It rocked back and forth, its cloak swirling as it did so. The golden eyes—which were accompanied by thick silver eyebrows, a handsome nose, and a large, vibrant mouth—peered into his face.

“Hey, hey! Are you okay? You had a pretty bad fall there! I didn’t know that familiars were so clumsy, why are mine always so clumsy…”

“Maybe it says more about you than about the familiars you summon,” Keiji muttered, getting to his feet. He extended his wings and let them flutter for a moment, shaking the dust off from both the journey and the landing. He stretched; everything seemed to be in place, the apparent pain from being summoned already faded.

Time for formal introductions, he supposed.

“I am Akaashi Keiji,” he said, bowing. “I’m your familiar.”

"Akaashi, the hotel is full."

Still not understanding the issue, Akaashi nodded. "But we have a room, do we not? Your key worked?"

Bokuto sighed, his head and even his hair seeming to droop. "It was the first time I booked a hotel room myself." He looked at Akaashi imploringly. "I thought I read everything carefully."

"Bokuto, I'm sure it's fine," Akaashi began to reassure him, but Bokuto shook his head and moved past him to open the door. He gestured for Akaashi to step inside and he did, bracing himself for what could possibly be wrong.

It became apparent immediately.

"There's only one bed," he said simply and Bokuto let out a sound behind him.

WIP time!!! Excited to be posting some new #bokuaka for @bokuakaevents.bsky.social on Sept. 20th!

When Bokuto was a kid, he'd stare out at the horizon and wonder when world would open up to him. As he got older, he realized just how much of the it was out of his reach, and sometimes it got too big and vast and overwhelming, knowing he'd never have everything. He certainly WANTED everything. He felt it truly, deeply, with every thrum of his pounding heart. He belonged to a world with brilliant orange skies and crashing oceans and bustling cities with lights that filled the nighttime like neon stars.
But somewhere along the way, Bokuto carved out a place all to himself. He found volleyball, the resounding crack of a good shot, the roar of a crowd. He found subjects that he loved learning about-WAY more than certain other subjects, that was for sure. He found friends, and laughter, and warm nights at a bar downtown. He found his favorite meat bun at the konbini a few streets down from his house, and the way the steam rose when he tore it in half.

Keiji didn't lift her eyes from her book at the soft jingle of the bell. A short, staccato cough, and the glint of the sun reflecting from the corner of her eyes, caught her attention enough to pry her away from her book.
Bokuto stood in the threshold, hair wetly plastered to her face and clothes similarly drenched.

Koutarou motioned for him to open the window. Keiji shook his head 'no'.

For a long time, they just looked at each other. Then, the alpha pointed up to him before morphing the gesture into a small heart by pinching his thumb and index finger together, smiling weakly.

It wasn't the question that he had been expecting: Do you still love me?

Of course, my star.

Keiji smoothed down his nightshirt, making sure that it hung low enough to cover him before he climbed up and knelt on the window box, moving into full view so that the alpha could see him better over the eaves. Keiji pointed back at him until Koutarou nodded 'yes'.

Okay, good. I've got your attention.

Keiji moved to hold his arms in a cradle across his chest, making a gentle rocking motion like he was holding an infant.

Babies. I want babies, Kou, and I don't care how they get here.

They passed an MSBY mural on the wall of the station as they made their way slowly to the stairs going up. Seeing a larger than life artist's rendition of Koutarou's face plastered across the wall tripped something in his mind.

Could it be. . .

Maybe, but if so, it's way too early to tell.

He's gone out and bought a box of pregnancy tests about two weeks before, after Koutarou's rut had ended: both the old school 'pee on a stick' kind, and the pheromonal type that were supposed to work better for all secondary genders.

"No!" he yelped, but snapping his head back to look at the mangaka made the world start to spin again. "Sorry, no, I- I don't want to worry him. I'll be fine once I'm able to get home. I apologize for not being able to continue our work for the day. . ."

I don't want to get my hopes up, just to have them dashed.

"Nonsense, Akaashi-kun," Udai waved down his apologies. "Your inside knowledge on volleyball is killer, but it's only good to me if you're conscious, dude."

"It's not like I have a lot of choices, Bokuto," Sakusa seethed. "It's this or risk never playing again."

Again. . . if it was you, wouldn't you do the same thing?

"I wouldn't say never; people have been out for longer with injuries before, and they ended up coming back. Remember when Barnes-san blew out his knee? He was on the bench for like a year-"

Sakusa looked at him like he was the stupidest man on the planet.

"Barnes didn't pop a fucking baby out of his-"

Koutarou held his hands up in surrender.

"Okay, okay, I'll approve you being excused from practice for the next four days . . . that starts Monday, right?"

"Yes."

"Okay. Text me or something afterwards to let me know you're okay."

"Bo-"

"I don't need details," he clarified quickly. "And I'm not trying to talk you out of anything— it's your life and none of my business—but if you change your mind, for any reason at all, and you want someone to back you up when you go to Coach and management, I'll support you 120%, Sakusa-san."

I always knew your house would be like this, Akaashi.” Bokuto’s voice was soft, his smile gentle, and Akaashi, still unaccustomed to this mature version of the boy he’d loved so deeply, couldn’t summon a single word.

“Remember when you used to read me poetry?” Bokuto laughed quietly, and the sound slipped across Akaashi’s skin, bringing out the softest shiver of pleasure.

Of course Akaashi remembered. He remembered with a jolt of longing so strong it bordered on painful: the tangle of their adolescent limbs; their shared breath in the quiet space of Bokuto’s room; the sensation of wanting something so much it seeped into his bones, an acutely physical ache. In all their years apart, in all the experiences they’d never gotten to share, there hadn’t been anything Akaashi had wanted even half as much.

Bokuto plucked a book from the shelf, and Akaashi couldn’t tear his eyes away from the splay of his fingers, entranced by the way they spanned the entire cover. He swallowed, but before he could try to break the silence, Bokuto spoke once more.

“I was so in love with you.”

Fun fact: "Reviewing an AI made translation" is more work for translators than just translating it themselves, because AI translations do not pass the sniff test beyond the most superficial. It's a loophole companies use as an excuse to underpay translators, and nothing else.

more often than not, i giggle and sway my feet whenever i draw akaashi bec hes really just that beautiful !!! i could experiment in a lot of art styles and mess up in between but somehow he'd remain beautiful in the end 😩
