One of my art trips this summer took me to Mänttä to see Anish Kapoor’s work. “Descendant,” which filled an entire exhibition space, was particularly impressive. But what exactly is it, and why did it smell? Works by other artists were also on display.

Finland and Lappeenranta in August. The sand sculptures were starting to look a little worn, but Majorska Café was still serving excellent treats in late summer. And of course, the atmosphere at the Major’s Wife’s café was intimate and patriotic.

A new exhibition, “Mail and Bits,” is opening at the Postal Museum in Tampere. A fun and surprisingly wide-ranging look at communication in the past and a little of today too. You can even get a picture of yourself in some old-time postal job from the past. AI can be fun too, not just annoying.

A week ago we kicked off the summer hiking season at the Iso-Vuorijärvi trail in Orivesi. The lake was still frozen, but under the sunshine and beautiful scenery it didn’t matter. Definitely coming back later this summer.

One Finnish Christmas tradition is to light a candle at relatives’ graves on Christmas Eve. By late evening, cemeteries look like a sea of lights. Fallen war heroes are honored with guards of honor and loved ones buried elsewhere can be remembered by lighting a candle at a designated memorial place.

View from my doorstep: I’ve always loved the forest and its peace, and here I get to enjoy it in the city. It brings back autumn walks with my late😢 beloved dog, in crisp air and rustling leaves. In Russia they say a man cries only twice—when his mother dies and when his dog dies. Close for me.
