I agree that we don’t already know how to teach “AI literacy” well. But I also think literacy is too modest a goal. College students should graduate knowing how ML works; it’s liberal knowledge analogous to RNA or trig, not search-engine skills or Excel. And we do know how to teach it in that way.

New Paper: Pixie: Code-Level Mechanic Generation for Game Designers. How do you connect automatic game design to real games? Pixie is a mechanic generation system for Unity games, as an example framework for how to build AGD systems into real game platforms. Read here: ojs.aaai.org/index.php/AI...
Procedural generation has been applied to many kinds of game content including levels, puzzles and narrative. Although PCG researchers have tackled the generation of rules and mechanics, these systems typically operate on bespoke codebases designed for mechanic invention tasks. In this pa-per we present Pixie, a system for generating and testing game mechanics that can be installed in any Unity project and configured using a simple annotation process to focus its scope and objectives. We describe the system’s design and operation, demonstrate its ability to generate mechanics for several open-source Unity games, and provide an initial discussion of developer perspectives on the content it generates and its usefulness as a design companion.

This comes up in many of my talks (and videos). Regurgitating or reacting to even the most mundane of player actions through NPCs and related gameplay systems is a small but easy win in game design. It helps players feel engaged as the game acknowledges your presence.

🧶 Fuzzy Linkography: Automatic Graphical Summarization of Creative Activity Traces we introduce a new way to analyze user activity logs from creativity support tools… …& illuminate patterns of creative divergence, convergence, idea development, & homogenization at scale arxiv.org/abs/2502.04599
Teaser figure (Figure 1) from the linked paper.

Caption: "Fuzzy linkography allows for the rapid translation of user activity logs from digital creativity support tools (and other traces of creative activity) into rough graphical summaries, suitable for visual and quantitative inspection by researchers."

On the left, a little sketchy person labeled "CST user" sits at a laptop and types in an idea to be rendered as an image. From their interactions, we derive a "creative activity trace" listing off all the ideas they've suggested as bullet points: "cat", "pink cat", "angry cat", and so on, all the way down to "pink cat with glasses". This trace passes through a process labeled "fuzzy linkography" (depicted here as a fuzzy purple cloud with a cat face and tail), and produces a graph labeled as a "fuzzy linkograph" that shows semantic and temporal relationships between user-suggested ideas. Another little sketchy person, labeled "researcher", peers at the fuzzy linkograph through a magnifying glass and thinks about the patterns they see.

University funding can be pretty opaque, even to current students, so there's a lot of things that people don't realize. Having international students is vital for many colleges, particularly in less-populated states. Humanities departments often subsidize other parts of the school. Et cetera.

relate to this bit specifically. sometimes something is not that hard to implement, but *is* hard to explain & pitch. if you want that stuff to happen, you gotta have a designer with their hands directly on the material, and trust them to try stuff without getting buy-in first.
Something that happens very often in game development is the encroachment of investment-style thinking onto the creative process: if something is at all complex, and it isn’t major, a pillar, something we’re sure about, it’s seen as expensive. And if it’s expensive, you need to make a case for it, and that means putting yourself on the line, and to do that convincingly, you need to make decisions up-front that rely on information you won’t really have until it’s implemented. You need to iterate, because that’s the only way design really happens, but people don’t really want you to, because that means taking steps you’re not completely sure of, which of course you have to.

then the output always surprises you. the procedurally generated art takes on a life of its own. you co-create something with the computer. math becomes art, and art becomes alive. bugs and quirks become endearing because it’s another way it seems living. i love it. 😌
