It's #ThingThursday and maybe you can help me identify a thing I came across? We paddled out to a backcountry camping site and found this tiny picnic table attached to a tree. It has four holes on the top of different sizes. I gussed maybe it was to feed chipmunks and provide entertainment?
a tiny picnic table is attached to a tree somehow, 6 feet off the ground at a campsite

Extremely cool postdoctoral fellowship opportunity with one of the all-time greats in the field, Dr. Eric Miller at the University of Toronto. Help take transportation modelling to the future by giving bicycles the attention they deserve in our quantitative models! #BikeTO #BikeSky #PhDSky
Active Travel Analysis & Planning Using an Advanced Activity/Travel Demand Model System: A Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunity

The University of Toronto Transportation Research Institute (UTTRI, https://uttri.utoronto.ca/) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow (PDF) to play a leading role in a two-year Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Alliance-Advantage project. The project involves: developing new models of bicycle route and mode choice; implementing these models in an advanced, operational agent-based microsimulation activity/travel demand forecasting system for the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area (GTHA); and using this model system to develop effective bicycle policies and infrastructure for improving sustainable and equitable accessibility and mobility within the region. The PDF will work under the supervision of Prof. Eric Miller, cosupervised by Profs. Shoshanna Saxe and Timothy Chan.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated strong experience in discrete choice modelling and, more generally, travel demand modelling. Experience in bicycle modelling and planning is desirable, as is experience with machine learning methods. The candidate must have strong communication and project management skills, and be able to work effectively in a team environment.

The University of Toronto is consistently ranked in the top 20-25 universities in the world. The Toronto metropolitan region is the largest in Canada and has consistently been the fastest growing major North American urban region, providing an excellent “living laboratory” for
studying urban dynamics and policy formation.

Applicants should submit their CV, graduate school transcripts and a one-page (maximum) statement of qualifications and interest in the position by email to Prof. Eric Miller, eric.miller@utoronto.ca. International applications are welcome, but the applicants must have completed their PhD within five years of their appointment date.

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

Important video for TPA haters: did you know that part of the cost of running a street festival is re-imbursing the TPA for lost parking revenue? The City waived this cost for the Church pedestrianization but, in general, that land belongs to cars and you owe them if you use it for anything else.

For #WorldPhotographyDay I'd like to share my favorite image I've taken this year. #Toronto harbour froze after weeks of negative temps, I decided to do a photo day on the islands in February. A snowstorm started and the cityscape disappeared, but as I ventured out onto the ice, it revealed itself.
a mother and child, who i do not know, were standing on the frozen lake against the cityscape of Toronto during a snowstorm.
I had been waiting for a composition like this to appear, its why I ventured onto the frozen lake. Pic taken Sunday Feb 2 2025.
