This is the real Russia Report, suppressed five years ago by Boris Johnson “I asked the question coming to Downing Street: was there interference in the 2016 referendum from Russia? And I’ve had the clear answer that yes, there was.” @andyburnham.bsky.social

Burnham seems to have (as well as his own qualities) good luck in terms of his rivals shooting themselves in the foot. Reform, Tories and Greens all seem to be imploding at the same time. I wasn't enthusiastic about him taking over, and I don't think a bounce was inevitable, but he's earned one.

As I just said elsewhere, he needs to do what Starmer did so effectively as LOTO, and brutally and visibly dispense with the anti-Israel entryists, making it clear they have no place in his party and will be thrown out. His response so far has fallen a long way short of that.

irs_uk @irsuk.bsky.social · 7h
It also points to entryism from the usual suspects which will only cause more problems over time, especially if unaddressed (or ineffectively addressed). For all his other faults Starmer recognised this in Labour and put those sorts in the bin.

There are more than reasonable criticisms to be made, though (and they go far beyond the by election itself, which on its own is a red herring but is part of a larger question about his judgement). Ignoring them doesn't make them untrue.
110
irs_uk @irsuk.bsky.social · 7h
Yeah, I agree with all of that. I don't think it's a resigning matter either but I do think his authority looks pretty well gone as a result, and with elections every 2 years within the party, I think that spells the beginning of the end if not the end itself.

I prefer Holt (STEVE HOLT) personally, they've never been a band in need of much in the way of vocal gymnastics. I prefer them in a laconic vibe, a la Sackville or Commercial Reign, which Holt does very nicely. Slightly influenced by Tom's dreadful solo album I Love My Job

Probably because a 3% vote share loss in a by election isn't statistically significant.
120
irs_uk @irsuk.bsky.social · 7h
The only way out was to win in Holborn, however improbable that was - but if it was so unlikely, why did he stand? So yeah, judgement, coupled with far left entryists killing their third political party with their nonsense. Hopefully the Greens can recover, as Labour did but Your Party couldn't.

irs_uk @irsuk.bsky.social · 7h
He appears to be desperately naive, has poor judgement and painted himself into a corner. He could have demonstrated leadership over the Zionism policy but he was evasive and his eventual answer was bland and legalese - thus shooting his only fox, as a plain communicator who can speak human.
120
irs_uk @irsuk.bsky.social · 8h
It's only indirectly about the by election. He now leads a party with a highly contentious policy about Israel that he doesn't appear to agree with, but he hasn't been especially clear on whether he does; he missed (and failed to influence) the vote because he was in Holborn instead of in the room.

Now you're talking Mark. How's the new stuff? I loved large parts of the self titled album, with some career-best songs like A-Z of my Heart and You're So Good For Me. Dreaming to hope for something as good this time (I thought Drag the Bag was a bit rubbish though so not hugely confident of this).

Tories totally unfunded tax cut for the wealthiest latest: they’ve hugely underestimated the cost of their policy and therefore the borrowing splurge their plans would cause. This is absolutely mad approach to economic policy making - totally giving up on fiscal credibility

This is a positive development, full stop. Anti-racism norms matter, elite cues on anti-racism norms matter, a broad political consensus on anti-racism norms matter so a strong signal from the leader of a party which has been blurring red lines lately is good news.

She is currently doing her bit about defending the UK from "separatists". Her problem, and it is a very severe one, is that Burnham's version of this section was one of the most compelling moments of oratory in decades of British politics. Her version is like watching something die.

I am deeply saddened that the "Zionism is Racism" motion has passed.
As Greens, we will always uphold universal human rights.

We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.

We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation.

We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government.

And we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way.

We know there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.

I don't even think it is excitement anymore, I think it's relief that the concept the MPs have to sell is simple enough for them to understand, because it's the only idea the party has had for 20 years now

This thread is why “you have to vote Polanski to send Labour a message on their xenophobia/transphobia etc” is not simple. For starters, you’ve got a nakedly antisemitic motion as the top priority. If this passes, you can’t ask genuine anti-racists to vote for a party that endorses things like this.
