I’m sure a lot of people have unique names for common family meals. “Sauspot” (pronounced “sauce pot”) is simply sausage and potatoes. “Flavor” is chili lime seasoned chicken breast with rice and vegetables on the side.

Super cool snapshot of a universe (even if it means including Dr Druid)

The spoiler in this is Century (thighs). We no longer have much cause to think about Century except in the context of Combo Man.

Packers/Bears at noon, Brewers NL Championship Series Game 1 at 7. If you need to get any shopping done in Wisconsin and want to avoid crowds, now is a good time to make your Costco run or what have you.

Had a bit of a close call with the podcast. Leak under the kitchen sink made its way through the floor and downstairs where I record. Laptop was in quite a vulnerable spot.

Byrne is a person I find absolutely fascinating for how comprehensively unpleasant he is, even leaving aside his more repulsive attitudes. His Superman comics are so marvelously entertaining, though. I hate what they say but they say it so engagingly.

Another more direct comic connection in this film: just looked up who did all the spooky drawings of ghouls in the graveyard from the third segment and it was John Bolton, probably best known in the U.S. as artist on the X-Men Classic backups!

THAT’S the stuff. I’m not even a huge James Bond fan (or a liker of guns I guess) but that is a logo that makes you go wooooohoooooo

Feels equally plausible this will be brilliant or terrible, but it’s certainly unexpected! I haven’t seen a Bond movie since Skyfall but what the hell, I’ll read this. Is that the official “007” logo now, though? I know the fashion is for minimalism/simplicity but does it have to be boring?

A real showcase of the magic of the Marvel Method. Byrne draws something visually interesting and dynamic, Claremont discovers the interior drama beneath that. Byrne provides form, Claremont provides texture. Individual elements are good but complement each other to become greater.

I’m not a big Doctor Who guy, don’t think I ever even saw a Matt Smith episode, but this is funny to me. Oh, that’s what you’d like, huh? Simple as recapturing lightning in a bottle! Of course, why didn’t I think of that? Someone should do Fantastic Four in a Lee/Kirby vein, I bet that’d be good too
Questioned on what he would want to see from a revamped Doctor Who, Hall harked back to the days when Matt Smith and David Tennant were playing the Doctor.

Watched 1981’s Hell Night, a surprisingly competent slasher with Linda Blair. Feels like it could use a brisker edit, but lots of fun, clever little bits in it.

Calvin: IVE NOTICED THAT COMIC BOOK SUPERHEROES USUALLY FIGHT EVIL MANIACS WITH GRANDIOSE PLANS TO DESTROY THE WORLD WHY DONT SUPERHEROES GO AFTER MORE SUBTLE, REALISTIC BAD GUYS?

Hobbes: YEAH, THE SUPERHERO COULD ATTEND COUNCIL MEETINGS AND WRITE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, AND STUFF.

Calvin: HMM... I THINK I SEE THE PROBLEM

Hobbes: “QUICK! TO THE BAT-FAX!”

Jedi in this film do not demonstrate any physical/telekinetic abilities, only mental/psychic ones. Even Vader’s “Force choke” could be rationalized as some kind of hypnotic suggestion: “You believe you can’t breathe,” rather than actually crushing a windpipe.

I like that the lightsaber duel is slow. It’s minimalistic precision fighting, testing each other to find weaknesses, rather than crazy acrobatics.

Of course the actual Doylist reason is that Vader was so cool he got “promoted” by Lucas between movies. But actually I think he’s more interesting in his original conception as uneasy ally with an ambiguous position in the hierarchy.

“…so if Tarkin gives you an order, you make a show of following it, but we’ll understand what the deal REALLY is.” But then once the Death Star blows up, Palpatine goes, “Okay, mask off. I’m a space wizard, Vader is #2 and this is now a death cult instead of a military thing.”
