I’m not a big Doctor Who guy, don’t think I ever even saw a Matt Smith episode, but this is funny to me. Oh, that’s what you’d like, huh? Simple as recapturing lightning in a bottle! Of course, why didn’t I think of that? Someone should do Fantastic Four in a Lee/Kirby vein, I bet that’d be good too
Questioned on what he would want to see from a revamped Doctor Who, Hall harked back to the days when Matt Smith and David Tennant were playing the Doctor.

Dovetailing with the recent bonus ep on Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography, plenty of thoughts on post-Crisis Lex in this discussion on Man of Steel!

I confess: I find Return of Swamp Thing more entertaining than the Wes Craven original.

Watched 1981’s Hell Night, a surprisingly competent slasher with Linda Blair. Feels like it could use a brisker edit, but lots of fun, clever little bits in it.

Calvin: IVE NOTICED THAT COMIC BOOK SUPERHEROES USUALLY FIGHT EVIL MANIACS WITH GRANDIOSE PLANS TO DESTROY THE WORLD WHY DONT SUPERHEROES GO AFTER MORE SUBTLE, REALISTIC BAD GUYS?

Hobbes: YEAH, THE SUPERHERO COULD ATTEND COUNCIL MEETINGS AND WRITE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, AND STUFF.

Calvin: HMM... I THINK I SEE THE PROBLEM

Hobbes: “QUICK! TO THE BAT-FAX!”

At this point, though, if someone contends they've never even heard of The Iron Age of Comics, it may say more about the listener than the podcast. Or, for that matter, what they want to project to the world.

Jedi in this film do not demonstrate any physical/telekinetic abilities, only mental/psychic ones. Even Vader’s “Force choke” could be rationalized as some kind of hypnotic suggestion: “You believe you can’t breathe,” rather than actually crushing a windpipe.

I like that the lightsaber duel is slow. It’s minimalistic precision fighting, testing each other to find weaknesses, rather than crazy acrobatics.

Update and correction on our Grendel coverage! Thread contains some cool comparisons between the original colors and what’s been redone for the collections. Once again (opinion) trying to apply current color technology and aesthetics to older work creates an odd kind of uncanny valley.

Jerry Robinson (Jan 1, 1922-Dec 11, 2007) co-created the Joker and Robin, taught Steve Ditko how to draw, forced DC to make a deal with Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and looked like Roy Scheider. What a dude.

My pitch to the BBC for Doctor Who (because of course they asked me) would be a bit formalist. Since the revival series went all-in on the episodes being like little movies, a new show might differentiate itself by embracing the staginess of the original show.

Picked up Aliens vs. Avengers at the library, just finished it. I respect the hell out of taking what could be a dopey synergy crossover thing and making an ambitious and thoughtful meal out of it. But man was that a thing I did not enjoy reading even a little bit.

It wasn’t Marvel that had Cap’s shield made, it was Mark Gruenwald. Fabian and others are trying to get credit for Mark out there. And maybe his widow would like the shield returned to her. I know I would.

THE ARCHENEMIES CLUB, THE MARVEL UNIVERSE:

DOCTOR DOOM: I trapped the Fantastic Four inside a miniature world where they were denied their greatness and Reed Richards was forced to acknowledge himself as my intellectual inferior.

RED SKULL: I used the Cosmic Cube to assume Captain America's form and pervert his image.

BARON ZEMO: I, with the Masters of Evil, posed as a new team of superheroes to gain the public's trust and gain access to their files after their disappearance.

KINGPIN: I dismantled Daredevil's private life piece by piece until he was broken, penniless, and homeless.

NORMAN OSBORN, THE GREEN GOBLIN: I grabbed Spider-Man's girlfriend and I knocked her off a bridge!

EVERYONE: ...

NORMAN OSBORN, THE GREEN GOBLIN:
And then I flew away!

I mean I blame August Derleth. As much as he’s to be lauded for helping keep Weird Fiction work alive he’s also to blame for like, literal power sets and like hierarchical rankings of what are supposed to be unknowable forces from outside space and time. The godfather of the villains wiki I guess.
