shorturl.at/sNGFB Excellent article by @ellamcsweeney.bsky.social in run-up to #Budget2027 Nature restoration is a low-cost way to tackle problems the State is paying to fix. Healthy wetlands, rivers & coastal habitats can help buffer flooding, drought & storms. @simonharrisireland.bsky.social

Ireland is the last stand for rare coastal machair habitats in the EU – but it’s failing
Funding nature restoration looks like an easy line to leave blank in the budget. That would be an expensive mistake

What do we want from our hills? A heavily subsidised over-grazed landscape, or native forest and wetland that is far less flammable, with sensitively grazed heathland full of diversity? We do need to invest in our uplands, for farmers, for nature, for us all to enjoy a restored landscape.

@whittledaway.bsky.social put it well: "Could more sheep and more "controlled burning" help prevent fires in the future, as this article suggests? In way, the answer is yes. However, we could also ask: would paving over the hills prevent fires? The answer too, would be yes."

Apparently the shark was released back into the water immediately, so 🤞it was okay. It is legal to catch + release sharks (except the protected Basking Shark). Some anglers have collected data that has helped critical research. But it needs to be better regulated, with licences & training.
