Well, look, there isn’t enough space in a single skeet to cover all 27-ish Bay Area transit agencies. I also didn’t mention that on SF Bay Ferry to the East Bay you tap on and off, whereas on Golden Gate Ferry to Marin you only tap once, which could be at the beginning or end depending.

Okay I’ve never been to Pittsburgh (I’d like to!) but, 1. Having certain circulator lines that are fare-free is totally chill. Most agencies IME could do a better job of spelling out which those are. 2.Tapping on is normal. Tapping off after tapping on is normal. Only tapping off sounds insane.

San Francisco, where live, is almost exactly the same lol. Except for the light rail some stops have fare gates, and some you tap when you board the train.

Apparently SacRT (mostly) supports this now, branded as Tap2Ride. This was a bit confusing to me because they have Tap2Ride readers on Capitol Corridor trains, and at least as of a couple years ago CC’s beta Tap2Ride program was something different, where you had to enroll a transit card.

I think it’s good and important to spell out your exact fares for different journeys for anyone who cares to know, but I know that it’s gonna be a couple bucks and that’s fine, just tell me how to pay that couple bucks.

Transit agency websites should have a “How to pay your fare” page that’s linked prominently from the home page. When I get to a new city, I don’t need instructions on how to ride the bus or train; that’s the same everywhere. I need instructions on paying, which is different everywhere.
