Right now, I'm working on translating the code into another programming language, since it's gotten complex enough that it's becoming unmanageable for me in Python. Then, I want to develop a new way of representing the forms of words that will let me support pronunciations and spelling variants.

Robin @inthescales.com · 24/09/2026
My end goal with this is to be able to give irregular plurals and past tense verb forms for generated English words where appropriate. But I want for this to be not a superficial addition, but the result of a multilayered historical simulation that can generate a full dictionary entry at each stage.

You can see it shows several different forms, as well as some added grammatical information - it's conjugation. Internally, the word has three "stem" forms, which combined with the conjugation type can be used to generate every possible form of the word. These can be arranged in a table like this:
Top part of a full inflection paradigm for the Latin non-word "florpo". About three dozen different forms of the word, "florpo, florpis, florpit, florpimus", and so on. Just like you learned in Latin class. The bottom part of that inflection table, with imperative, infinitive, and participle forms.

My work so far on Lyre's 2nd ed., after setting up some basic foundations of word structure, has focused on generating inflection paradigms for words — that is, all the different forms a word can take depending on how it's used. As an example, here's an entry for the Latin non-word "florpō".
florpō, florpere, florpsī, florptus - verb (3rd conjugation)
to florp

Starbucks Workers United @sbworkersunited.org · 25/08/2026
🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

Stories of Elf World - part 1 of 2
The cover of the short comic Stories of Elf World by Madeline McGrane

The cover depicts the unnamed elf, a tall elf woman with long hair wearing traditional elf garb, bikini, thigh high boots, gauntlets. The Elf is holding a sword pointed towards the ground and is looking pensively at the unnamed human. The human is an average height woman with spiky hair wearing a crop top and pants. She is sitting on the ground and looking up fondly at the elf.
Page 1 of the short comic Stories of Elf World by Madeline McGrane

The elf is telling a story while getting ready for the day, donning traditional elf garb (bikini, thigh high boots, gauntlets) and combing her hair.

Elf: Elf World is ending. It has been ending for some time now. Perhaps the end began even before the days of the sorceress. Elf world was once ruled by virtuous queens.

The elf pauses her story to adjust the human's stance. The elf and the human are practicing swords.

The elf resumes her story.

Elf: Now, as you know. Elf world is ruled by the sorceress in the tower.
Page 2 of the short comic Stories of Elf World by Madeline McGrane

Elf, narrating off page: Instead of ruling wisely and justly for the glory of elf world, the sorceress constructed dungeons and mazes and machines for war and torment.

The distant figure of the sorceress looks out over elf world from a high window in her sinister tower. She looks upon walls crafted of masonry and twisting thorny vines. Three elf women hang in chains from the walls, representing the torment of all elves under the reign of the sorceress. Below the captive elves, an elf soldier who serves the sorceress rides an armored, 3-toed elf horse. Page 3 of the short comic Stories of Elf World by Madeline McGrane

Elf, narrating off page: At the height of her power, the sorceress attempted to capture the sun and encase her in a terrible machine.

The sorceress and her soldiers wrap the sun, who appears to be a large elf woman, in cables and attempt to pull her down from the sky.

Elf, narrating off page: But the sun escaped. Once gentle, she was driven to hate.

The sun has broken out of the cables and destroyed the sorceress's machinery. She sends a vengeful wave of flame toward the sorceress.

Elf, narrating off page: The wounded sun turned away from elf world.

Elves stand in the darkness, looking towards their distant sun.

Those are all broad fields, but I think they can give you some ways to understand what a particular language is like, and the lines along which languages can change and influence each other
000
Robin @inthescales.com · 30/03/2025
For topics, beyond individual sounds there’s phonotactics (how sounds are arranged in a language). And for other structural elements of a language besides sound, you can look into morphology (how words are built up from parts) and syntax (how words are used together).

Being familiar with how sounds are classified will help make sense of sound changes, since they tend to apply to categories of sounds. This wiki article and its sub-articles give some good examples of the kinds of sound changes you might encounter. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonolo...

Robin @inthescales.com · 29/03/2025
Some phonology might be a good starting place, to get grounded in how linguists conceptualize sounds. Peter Roach's 'English Phonetics and Phonology: A Practical Course', cheap on ebay, gives some introduction with English as a familiar case study. Wikipedia has some good phonology articles too

Many English surnames come from a profession or personal quality of their original bearer. For example, if your last name is Man or Mann, one of your ancestors may have been a man

Thank you for offering! I think it would be a lot of work though, so I'd start by looking for any existing pronunciation lists — sometimes academics put these things together and publish them

Hmm, I'll give that way of analyzing the phonemes some thought whenever I get back to this. In the meantime, depending on what you want to do you might be able to use the ligature system if you want to have a separate character for other vowels + r. Glad you like it!

Do any word-coding types out there have a favorite way for getting pronunciations from written English words? I've been using the CMU pronouncing dictionary for my current thing, but I have some frustrations with it, and ideally I could get British pronunciations as well as American.

what am i doing reinventing the wheel, our friends on the continent have already developed perfectly functional systems for writing germanic languages in the latin alphabet
Screenshot of just the text conversion input output of this page. A paragraph about the history of childhood education in Britain, rendered in a spelling designed to imitate German. For example, the "sh" sound is rendered s-c-h, the vowel in 'line' as e-i, etc.

Screen capture from a roughly made web page. At the top, under a tab labelled "Custom", a form. Name: "English 2". A table with text fields representing each sound in English (US pronunciation) filled with one or two letters each. Individually they might appear conventional, except for one stray umlaut and one incongruous double 'r'. Below, a button labelled "convert", a large text field pasted in with that speech from Macbeth with "full of sound and fury" and all that in it. Beside that box, an output of the same text converted into the spelling system detailed at the top, looking completely stupid (but phonologically consistent)
