eBay sending me a whimsical upbeat email to let me know that my replacement vacuum cleaner hose will be delivered today and I couldn't be less excited.

Aside from not answering the question and throwing his dinner off the high chair, I'm most struck by the spelling of prat with a capital P and two Ts.

If the perception generated by a cyclist not wearing a helmet is that they are both vulnerable and reckless then that's exactly what I would want drivers to think - keep away from this guy: he's vulnerable and reckless.

Circe Helios Tandem – 24-Speed – Excellent Condition | eBay UK
The carrier is pretty old but perfectly serviceable. This model has 24 speed Shimano gears and 2" Schwalbe Big Apple tyres. Big enough for a smooth and efficient ride but fast enough for when the young stoker wants to race her brother.

If I'm forced to have a niche opinion it is that Reacher as a normal Cruise-sized guy is a better, more believable and therefore more effective character than Reacher as a lumbering giant. Sorry but Tom Cruise's Reacher is better.

Rails to Trails: the thread about how North Edinburgh got its cycle paths
On this day, 40 years ago, a councillor cut the ceremonial ribbon and opened a section of cycle path in north Edinburgh. This was a rather special bit of cycle path however as it hadn't been built by the council. It was built by direct citizen action: over the course of a single week it had been reclaimed from the trackbed of an old railway a group of volunteers. Wind the clock forward four decades and from these humble beginnings has grown a network of almost 20km (12 miles) of such paths in this part of the city. There's a good chance that you've cycled, walked, jogged or otherwise explored them. The credit for this their creation sits almost entirely with the relentless (and often thankless) hard work of a single, slightly anarchic organisation. This thread is the story of how the North Edinburgh Path Network came to be.

Now that I've seen the list I think Peter Murrell comes across as a sad, lonely man consoling himself by buying expensive random shit.

I’d rather live in a country based on shared values than one based on shared skin colour, birthplace or religion. I think the vast majority of people agree. I think we all need to start doing more to call out people that disagree and, particularly, try to make that disagreement public policy.

Mildly astonished that travel app developers think that when I say I want to arrive by 17:45 they should start by telling me how to get there by 11:10. They don't even sort by journey arriving closest to 17:45 just here's a list of everything that will get you there before. Find it yourself.

Personally, I've always hated the use 'somewhat' in these questions. It's a bland, flabby, essentially meaningless word. I get that it's 'more one than the other' but it's then lumped in with 'strongly' to give its jelly texture more solidity than it deserves.

It doesn't matter how lightly singed that toast is, the smoke alarm's going off. It also doesn't matter how much the wood burner blows back and fills the room with smoke. There will be no alarm.

Every time the idea of cutting the price of a pint by cutting duty comes up I feel obliged to point out that beer duty is paid by the brewery not the pub so there's no guarantee that this would work (and every reason to think the brewery would keep the money).

The Blue Whale. The local pond now has a sheet of ice covering most of it, but the resident wildlife have got together to keep this small section clear, taking turns to circle and keep it ice free. Nature does it best. #Winter #BirdPhotography #AerialPhotography #Clackmannanshire #RSPBScotland
A cold blue toned photograph of a variety of birds in the a pond in winter. An aerial shot taken with a drone over a small frozen village pond. The ice has been kept clear in a small area by the mallards, coots, moor hens and swans working together to share the ice free area. The fringes of the pool have hundreds of small pieces of food - mostly bread - encased in the frozen water as local visitors throw and scatter food towards the birds. They won't go hungry!

I wanted dinner recommendations so I scraped 13,000+ London restaurants and accidentally discovered Google Maps is running a shadow economy. Anyway here's a dashboard and a political economy thesis: open.substack.com/pub/laurenle...

How Google Maps quietly allocates survival across London’s restaurants - and how I built a dashboard to see through it
I wanted a dinner recommendation and got a research agenda instead. Using 13000+ restaurants, I rebuild its ratings with machine learning and map how algorithmic visibility actually distributes power.
