Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Even if we accept that both polling samples and reddit contributors are biased relative to the general population, I don't see how you can conclude that they are biased in the same ways, which they'd need to be for one to act as a substitute for the other. 000

Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 06/10/2026It's physical labour coupled with nostalgia for dying industries and skills. Britain was Great when it was the workshop of the world. Only Fans, Betfair, Skyscanner and Games Workshop (or the entire creative and hospitality industries) don't fit that mould. 030
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Professor used mean something. Must be annoying to be a real professor. 010
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 22/09/2026The question might be, did the actions of Mr Thomas (or whoever) significantly increase the danger faced by the crew member beyond what he or she would ordinarily face without Mr Thomas' (or whoever) activities. I would think that simply holding them at sea could pass that test. 060
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Yes, I have. I have sailed, I have a canoe, a drysuit and a buoyancy aid. I've capsized in lochs and rivers in summer and winter. That's why I think that while having a dry suit and a buoyancy aid/life jacket might reduce the danger, it doesn't eliminate it. 140
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 22/09/2026A drysuit and life jacket is not a magical force field. Anyone put at risk of going in the water is being endangered. 1590
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Two pieces of shabby leather? Stop, you're turning me on! 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I assume they mean do you own your home? It still wouldn’t be a great question. 120
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 22/09/2026eBay sending me a whimsical upbeat email to let me know that my replacement vacuum cleaner hose will be delivered today and I couldn't be less excited. 010
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Everyone (who eats meat) should make their own bacon. 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 22/09/2026My son's hatred of cucumbers and courgettes - they taste absolutely vile to him - forced a rethink of all childhood 'don't like' episodes. They still barely taste of anything to me. 120
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 21/09/2026I was 18 at a restaurant with people from college and I didn’t know what cappuccino was. But that was 45 years ago. 010

Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Just wondering. Are you happy for cars to breeze through red lights at 3am, if there’s no one around? 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Doxing them so I can send a postcard thanking them for their bravery? How thoughtful. 011

Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Don't know how many times I've had to use my phone to locate my partner's phone when she's left it somewhere. Or she's used her's to find out how far away I am when I'm out on my bike. Or I've used to it to see if my son's at work today. It's an innocuous and useful feature recast as "tracking". 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Went to see the Anthony Boursin biopic. Good but a little cheesy. 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I suppose if you used to say you'd never go on a cruise and then gone on a cruise you can no longer say you'd never go on a cruise because you've just done the thing you said you'd never do so you have to say something else and to avoid looking like a complete ass, you probably say you liked it. 070
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I thought the louche (is he drunk?) hamminess of Bill Nighy was the whole point. 120
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 25/08/2026Our neighbour has what is now a tree that literally snaps under the weight of sloes the size of small plums. It's a bit of trip but you'd be welcome to come and help yourself. She can never get rid of enough of them. 010
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 24/08/2026Yes, in my head I'm the sort of person who goes to arthouse cinemas and enjoys it yet here I am on the sofa watching Jason Statham on Netflix. 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 23/08/2026It reminds me of finding out the Dilbert guy was a Maga loon. Patrick is one of the few survey gurus and to find him defending a head-lump, quack, pseudoscience racist on the basis of some misplaced Voltaire misquote about academic freedom is just disappointing. 101
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Aside from not answering the question and throwing his dinner off the high chair, I'm most struck by the spelling of prat with a capital P and two Ts. 130
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Can also recommend using old comics to make notebook covers and bunting. 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 18/08/2026If the perception generated by a cyclist not wearing a helmet is that they are both vulnerable and reckless then that's exactly what I would want drivers to think - keep away from this guy: he's vulnerable and reckless. 021
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Now that the good weather is on the way out he finally gets around to listing the tandem for sale. ebay.io/m/KU9baLebay.ioCirce Helios Tandem – 24-Speed – Excellent Condition | eBay UKThe carrier is pretty old but perfectly serviceable. This model has 24 speed Shimano gears and 2" Schwalbe Big Apple tyres. Big enough for a smooth and efficient ride but fast enough for when the young stoker wants to race her brother. 011
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 16/08/2026If go to the pub with your pal and don't talk to anyone else it's the wrong pub or you're not going regularly or often enough. Say hello to Iain, chat to Tracy behind the bar. At least say Hi to Tommy who's having a fag outside when you go in. Have a friendly argument with Mike, the village racist. 010
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 14/08/2026If I'm forced to have a niche opinion it is that Reacher as a normal Cruise-sized guy is a better, more believable and therefore more effective character than Reacher as a lumbering giant. Sorry but Tom Cruise's Reacher is better. 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 13/08/2026Not sure when I'll get over the fact that I made a thing that writes titles to minidiscs when I send a message from my phone. 000

Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 16/07/2026We don't know what they were protesting about and we don't know if they were unemployed at the time of the protest but apart from that ... 000
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 10/07/2026Indeed, locating the problem in entirely the wrong place. Is it the dangerous incentives created by parasitic employers adopting precarious employment practices or is it the speed limit? 020
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 10/07/2026That's very true and if it starts to engage the time of health, law enforcement and insurance professionals ... 100
Steven Hope @instography.bsky.social · 10/07/2026So it's not necessarily *lost* time. And yes, you can do what you like in any four minute period but your choices are made within constraints that you don't necessarily control. The speed limit is one of those: your little bit of time weighed against the completely lost time of people killed. 110
