yeah so a bunch of liberals and leftists on X and bluesky mocking queer people for wearing masks to a queer bar is the most predictably terrible outcome of that article

totally sucks to log back on after driving across the country to see so much hate levied at the action of masking specifically, not to mention the people who are desperate for the very few places (it’s literally named last ditch people) still safe if not encouraging toward those who wear them.

chronically ill non-driver here, yup. also no one wants to take cars away from rural folks and the disabled people who need them. nor is there a remotely politically viable program to take cars away from folks in general. but there are a hell of a lot of car trips that could be bike or transit trips

“If this was true, I would be in jail” is not a real profession of innocence; it is a brag about how strenuously the state protects the male right of private sphere violence against women and children.

Great thread. Yale’s efforts at some kind of settlement should cast doubt on its much-publicized April report on the humanities. It wasn’t a report, but a performance to satisfy political censors. Pundits who praised the “report” as a source of “bold ideas” for reform should admit their complicity.

Biked some errands today (farmer's market, bakery/coffee shop, zero-waste store, & library) & it is absurd to me that Providence has a bunch of safe places to bike, but they're not all connected

I have owned a bike for 4 days. Since then, the word "stroad" has entered by vocabulary, I'm talking to everyone I meet about better pedestrian and bike infrastructure, and I'm already planning bike-based day trips (with public transit to fill in gaps). Is this just what happens?

The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.

This report should get as much if not more coverage than the other Yale report. It won’t, however, because it doesn’t fit the media narrative about higher ed as a woke indoctrination factory.

I don't expect BlueSky to exist to be able to cash in on this prediction, but I'll put the over under on this at six years. They'll evaluate in three (the current duration) realize it's not working, but decide to try to tweak it, the sentiment will be against it at year 5 and take 1 more to kill it.

Why did a reputable journal publish such a shoddy meta-analysis? Why did it rack up so many citations? Why did it get reported so widely? I'd guess that the answers to these questions all stem from the US's neoliberal allergy to public goods. 1/🧵 arstechnica.com/ai/2026/05/i...

The Supreme Court's "conversion therapy" decision today is indefensible on its own terms. A ton of medical regulations restrict speech on the basis of "viewpoint." Nobody thinks they're unconstitutional. This court just subjects pro-LGBTQ protections to special hostility. slate.com/news-and-pol...
Yet anti-LGBTQ+ therapists now enjoy a First Amendment right that is denied to abortion providers. But as Jackson pointed out, the inconsistency runs deeper. After Chiles, parents who seek to “convert” their transgender children have a constitutional right to do so. But thanks to last year’s decision in Skrmetti, parents who seek to affirm their transgender children with medication have no such right. States can ban gender-affirming medication but evidently cannot ban anti-transgender talk therapy. And the majority does not explain why anti-LGBTQ+ speech receives heightened protections when other viewpoints do not. Surely, Jackson wrote, a state can direct doctors to discourage, and not encourage, smoking cigarettes. It can prohibit doctors “from telling an anorexic patient to eat less” while allowing them to recommend eating more. It can stop doctors from encouraging patients to end their lives. These laws, too, censor speech on the basis of the state’s preferred viewpoint—in Gorsuch’s words, they “enforce orthodoxy.” Why is it, then, that nobody seriously argues that they’d violate the First Amendment, too?
