sweater weather sara @inperplexitea.bsky.social · 15/09/2026We were all singing in our ranges, if I recall correctly -- you just picked whichever "A" worked for you and went from there. I was in children & teen choir and it wasn't uncommon for me to be singing a full octave lower than the soprano next to me, but we were both singing the same melody 100
sweater weather sara @inperplexitea.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I've been in TEC for a decade and still find myself bristling at the hymnal and choral tradition in the church, this is why I attend a church that offers a service without music. If I had to go to a TEC church with music, I think it would be a real challenge for me 000
sweater weather sara @inperplexitea.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I then took a detour to Evangelicalism; there we also had an emphasis on singing in unison and used songs that followed the structure of pop songs, which I think makes them feel more familiar and simpler. 210
sweater weather sara @inperplexitea.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Many of the songs I grew up with also had a kind of verse/chorus structure which made it easier to "learn" them because you heard the chorus 3-4 times and could join in when you learned them. They were also from a more folk tradition as opposed to a choral one, so they seemed more familiar. 110
sweater weather sara @inperplexitea.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I grew up Catholic in a church that used a lot of Marty Haugen and David Haas music. There wasn't an emphasis on harmony and usually the congregation and choir sang in unison. Sonically, TEC's musical can sound more "complex" because of the harmonies. 100

Yale’s efforts at some kind of settlement should cast doubt on its much-publicized April report on the humanities. It wasn’t a report, but a performance to satisfy political censors.
