This is true at all levels of publishing. Don't vibe with what a magazine publishes? or a publisher? Then your manuscripts probably aren't going to fit in. Read widely because its exciting to find where your work fits but also it is enjoyable to read works that aren't like what you wanna do at all

* on Tattrie's To Leave A Warrior Behind which I've actually finished and therefore shouldn't be in this pile, so I'll have to find a spot on the bookshelves. It's a biography of Charles Saunders, the Sword and Soul pioneer, and everybody who cares about sword and sorcery and/or history of sci-fi should read it.
