Elacatinus phthirophagus is a sister species of E. randalli and is endemic from Brazil. Many species from Brazil also occur in the SE Caribbean - which is actually the rationale behind one of my PhD chapters 🐠🧬

7/8 Our study highlights research gaps. Address them will improve trade assessments using DNA based-tools and help develop measures for shark and ray protection. Updating legislation, enhancing monitoring, and fostering collaborations are crucial for comprehensive conservation action.

6/8 We examined national and international extinction risk status lists and key conservation and labeling legislation. The SALVE System expanded Brazil's species assessment. Hopefully, it will inform new management legislation, that should align with labeling ones to boost conservation.

Ingrid Bunholi @ingridbunholi.bsky.social · 18/03/2024
5/8 We also found bony fish in trade, alongside other mislabeled samples. Mislabeling, including the generic umbrela-labels (i.e. "cação") obscures species identification, hamper consumer trust and conservation efforts. Standardized labeling is vital for accurate trade regulation.

Ingrid Bunholi @ingridbunholi.bsky.social · 18/03/2024
4/8 From the 203 elasmobranchs species in Brazil, 64 were found in Brazil's trade, being 83% threatened. A trend in threat status was noted, with 44% of species previously non-threatened now facing extinction. This underscores the urgent need for strict management measures in Brazil.
100
Ingrid Bunholi @ingridbunholi.bsky.social · 18/03/2024
3/8 We also noted a shift towards Sanger sequencing in the DNA-based tools. Molecular databases primarily feature globally distributed elasmobranch species over endemic ones, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive national with regular curation.

Ingrid Bunholi @ingridbunholi.bsky.social · 18/03/2024
2/8 We observed a geographical bias along the Brazilian coast, showing a higher concentration of studies in the Southeast, North and South regions, with very few studies on the Northeast region. This highlights the need to distribute resources and research efforts equitably.
