I don’t mind giving free talks/courses AT ALL, especially for undergrad students. But after 6 yrs in undergrad, 2.5 in a master’s, and years of lab + fieldwork, being asked to train staff for free by a rich company charging R$100 per ticket is a complete disrespect to my work.

Yesterday, I taught a class at the Specialized Professional Fisher course, a partnership between the Brazilian Navy and IFSC Itajaí, sharing insights on Brazil’s fisheries laws, shark & ray ID, and safe handling + release. Part of the Project PESCA’s activities supported by the MCAF Fellowship. 🦈

#TBT to an unforgettable night at the City Council of Balneário Camboriú — on July 9, I received the Resolution of Congratulations for 7 years dedicated to shark & ray conservation! I’m proud to work alongside artisanal fishers to generate vital knowledge about these species. 🦈

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been awarded a Resolution of Congratulations by the City Council of Balneário Camboriú 🇧🇷 for my 7 years of research dedicated to understanding and protecting our marine life! Besides me, artisanal fishers will also receive their own Resolutions. 🦈🎉

🧪 🦈 🐟 🦑 For #WobbegongWed, let me introduce you to a lesser known #wobbegong #shark species: Network wobbegong (Orectolobus reticulatus) In 2015, this species was only known from 4 specimens! (fish.gov.au/docs/SharkRe...) 📸 (sam_amini) - www.inaturalist.org/observations...

Dear fish friends, which scientific journals do you recommend for a short communication to publish about new records of a species of fish in a region where they have never been seen before? 🐟🔍👀 I have a few names in mind, but suggestions are always welcome. Thanks! 🙏 ✨

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

My 2024 started in the US. On Jan. 2nd I came to attend my 2nd conference here. Now, Dec. 31st, I just landed in Atlanta to attend my 4th conference. Not even in my wildest and most ambitious dreams did I think that one day I was going to experience something like this.

Today a cownose ray (Rhinoptera bonasus) washed up dead on our Central beach. Luckily and, thanks to my DVM friend, I managed to get it before the authorities threw the animal in the trash. I’ll collect as much data and samples as possible so that this life wasn’t lost in vain.

Fishing began as a hobby between me and my father. Nowadays, fisheries is part of my job. Through this activity, I’ve met so many special people and lived unforgettable moments. I’m so grateful to all the fishers who trust me and my work. Happy #WorldFisheriesDay 🐟

I study shark neuromechanics and neurophysiology. I post about marine biology, fishes, sharks (and their relatives), plus trans and disability inclusion (for a short list). I also lead trans related seminars and do various outreach events yearly. Open to collaborations, depending on the project.

I made a list of folks who work in ocean science and conservation, post stuff that’s interesting to non-experts in those fields (like my students,) and post regularly. Give them a follow to get more ocean on your feed. I am always adding to this list. But please don’t ask me to add you. 🦑🧪🐠🌎

Does anyone here work with Atlantic Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus)? Yesterday I received images of a interesting record here in Brazil 🇧🇷 and I think it would be worth talking to researchers from other regions, especially about the impacts of climate change on this species. 👀

A few said it would be near impossible to work with chimaeras in Brazil 🇧🇷, because of their rarity here. Today I received audio from a fisher saying that he has a Callorhinchus callorynchus for me. Of the 5 Brazilian states that have records, I have specimens from 4 states. 🙏🥹❤️
