The algorithm doesn't want you calm, informed, or connected. It wants you angry, addicted, and isolated. Because that's what lines the pockets of folks like Musk and Zuckerberg.

And CBD Kratom insisted that 7-OH was different from heroin. The question should have been "different ENOUGH?" and the answer was "LOL no." Same here. There are no meaningful differences between prediction markets and other forms of betting, no matter how finely they split hairs.

Often I’ll remember this xkcd comic and get depressed. We’ve known climate change is real my entire life but spent decades pretending it wasn’t

October 1984
I’m born in Easton, PA
Summer 1991
I learn to ride a bike
Spring 1992
My elementary school celebrates Earth Day and I learn about the greenhouse effect
1993-1996
I get very into Star Wars and Animorphs
Fall 1996
I stand around awkwardly at my first middle school dance
Spring 2002
I get accepted into college
Spring 2006
I somehow graduate despite spending most of my time playing Mario Kart
Summer 2006
I see An Inconvenient Truth in the theater and feel anxious
Fall 2011
I get married
Summer 2012
I read headlines about a global warning “pause” and hope that maybe things aren’t so bad
2013-2021
I read more about climate science and get steadily more alarmed
Spring 2016
I read the 1982 Exxon report
June 2020
Global 60-month average reaches +0.94°C, Easton, PA is 2°C hotter than normal for the fifth year in a row

If the job is awful, dangerous, boring, and a machine can do it? A machine *should* do it. If a machine can’t, then the humans who keep society going instead should be paid enough to allow them to retire well before the work ruins their bodies.

Fraternities are the ur-old boy network in the US. Joining one won't guarantee you end up running a fortune 500 company, or sitting on the Supreme Court... but if you don't join one the odds of those things happening are practically zilch. And that's a problem.

I'm basically a soothsayer. Comic from 2007 which was NOT 9 years ago turns out
Weedmaster P: Americans can't build a car that stays together or a shoe that costs less than ten thousand dollars but boy howdy we sure can build one hell of an internet huh Jeffrey: Yeah. Jeffrey: America invented the internet because they were afraid Russia would drop bombs on us from outer space. [[A bomb falls]] Weedmaster P: Maybe some hype shit will get made because of the global war on terrors Jeffrey: A vast computer network that believes in "evil", costs a billion dollars an hour and says the same 5 phrases over and over. {{Underneath}} Instead of showing you pictures of cats Internet 5.0 will question your patriotism

Read the article, not just the headline, because this is what "abolish the police" really looks like. It doesn't mean no peace or law enforcement. It means that any entirely corrupt dept should get disbanded and their responsibilities assigned to a new or higher agency.

Younger people don't know this, I think, but in the aftermath, when President Bush was asked what ordinary Americans could do about it, he literally told us not to do anything. Go shopping. Take your family to Disneyland. I knew already on that day that we were going to lose the US/Afghan war.

My whole attitude towards the homeless-shelter system changed when I found out that both of the biggest shelters in my area *immediately* send client's pets to animal control and that animal control euthanizes those pets if the sheltered person cannot find permanent housing *within two weeks.*

1. Shelters generally give you a bunk in a huge room full of people. A tent in an encampment gives you at least SOME privacy, some space that's yours. 2. Most shelters kick you out every morning, and have a curfew at night. 3. Shelters don't allow pets.

So, there's a thing I learned the hard way about middle managers in general and human resources employees in particular: whatever random thing that goes wrong needs to not be their fault. They're desperate for proof that they used due diligence. These companies sell that excuse.

The reason it's all zealots is that there's no other way to even try it. Limit Israel to Jewish-majority land and it's physically indefensible. Include enough land to be defensible and it's no longer Jewish-majority. There's no splitting that hair.

In the '80s, roughly half the Russian Jews fleeing pogroms came to the US and the other half went to Israel. On average, which group do you think ended up safer from anti-Semitic terrorism? "Nationalism will make us safer," has always been a false promise, it just makes more enemies.
