We're going to be forced to play semantic games and deliberately get lost in semiotics while in the real world, expulsions and killings are still continuing, retrospective articles stating the IDF lied are still being published, and people are still both sidesing. We're stuck in reboot culture

It's cool that we're going to run the 'zionism isn't racism and is actually normal' playbook again, while ignoring liberal Israeli politicians who are regularly going on podcasts calling for the permanent expulsion of all Palestinians and that killing children was actually fine, if not good

I can’t really take a political mainstream that insists the Greens be shunned but Reform and the Tories be treated as legitimate seriously.

It is bizarre that we are arresting OAPs for holding anodyne placards while people like Berger fulminate about non-existent demands and fictional party policies. A sincere and modest expression of belief is criminalised while brazen lying and hyperbolic emoting are indulged.

remember when in the house of commons one of the ministers said that it would be imoral to stop shipping Israel body armour?

I think a lot of the problem is also that Lulu is kind of a secret blairite, and that gives his party the same problem of the 1990s and early 00s dead zone as the Democrats and all the rest of them.

It's 1000% "Look who it is, the press." shit. Every night should have been going through project 2025 and just saying the most horrible bits

Nova is a kinder and less prideful woman than I am, which is why I’ll add the thing she would never say: Every NHS manager who created this crisis must be punished and every patient who was made to wait a second longer than the 18 week “maximum waiting time” should be paid compensation 🔥

honestly your quote on the dynamic nature of the PRC here reminded me of how eye opening running into some pro-PRC technothriller type video shit on youtube and see Chinese people also more or less imagine fighting a current American and Japanese and ROC force with their future weapons.

I remember the Humanist Inheritance (Did that like, ever get published anywhere?) which was hard science but basically used it for nothing but reinventing the most banal cod age of sail Weberian warfare from first principles.

you can imagine a really tense plot in which the main characters are stuck in a pot during a dead time when there's no viable outbound slots and have to evade gangsters or imperials or whatever hunting them until they the orbital transfer window opens, with escalating measures as it gets closer.

Cassandra Pronouns (she/her) @indiecornwall.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
If you're going to do hard SF, then use the limitations of your technology to drive the plot. Have the ship be stuck in a port until the next orbital window comes up and have to deal with that.

Cassandra Pronouns (she/her) @indiecornwall.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
what really annoys me is how often you have hard SF details but you are, effectively just doing star trek. Like the Expanse is kind of guilty of this. It's hard science fiction but the torches are so unrealistically powerful that you can just kind of turn and burn all the way across the system.

I think it can be a fun aesthetic if you do something with it other than show off. Like in my own setting there's an area which has a travel and non travel season because of orbital windows

Paradise island is actually a very weird political system in the comics. It's an absolute monarchy that's also an Athens style direct democracy.

There feels like there's a fundamental hold on British politics that stops much of the centre left from talking about what is happening right now and this is one part of it

Huh really? You see pension figures as a percentage of income passed around lower than most places. Is it because we're giving it out as other benefits?

I also note that we somehow avoid the fact that the uk has the lowest state pension in western Europe

the problem is that we spent the last 18+ years telling the British voters "Things are getting worse, we must tighten our belts" without end. What's necessary is not further telling Britain things will be bad, but a plan to actually make them good. And that plan has to be income tax and immigration

just had a great idea of how to do space boarding combat: Everyone has a soul catcher chip in their head and it's considered bad to destroy them. Most space combat is fought with drones, but you can't blow up a command ship even if it refuses to surrender, so you got to board.

"We send these people a letter and they didn't respond" is a pretty bad mechanism for determining "does this person exist".
