Everytime I see someone posting some measure of "the parties are basically the same," especially in an election year I think they're either an opp or an unwitting dupe. In reality they're usually just a depressed non-Black person faced with our reality and unprepared for it but shit's annoying!

It's striking that Brazil did exactly what so many on the left blame Biden for not doing: prosecuting and imprisoning the would-be authoritarian. Yet here we are. The message, I think, is that there is no legal or procedural means of safeguarding democracy if enough voters want a dictator.

And I genuinely believed some things I had read arguing that the thermostatic backlash — where congress tends to change hands to oppose the party of the president — evened things out overall, so that you would get more progress under Republicans than you might expect, and less under Democrats.

I have to confess: until the presidency of George W. Bush I was kinda swayed by the Naderish “the two party stranglehold is killing us” pitch, like, I genuinely thought we would benefit from the Green Party being a viable choice, at least in local elections.

It's funny. Because I agree with the solution at the end of the video that the Dems SHOULD go big. Problem is that this solution ignores the reality of how much racism also undergirds this loop and how consistently advancement of Black and brown folks, even unevenly, triggers backlash.
