I have unironically championed Cop Rock since its original run. It was art. It was kitsch. And it was a lab. It's almost as WTF? as Twin Peaks, also from 1990. The critics' initial mockery of it was an embarrassment to the profession.

Funny thing is there's a few later Aelita knockoffs, in which the Soviet cosmonauts arrive at, say, Venus instead of Mars, but also just Mars again, why not, and immediately, wasting no time, start the Great October Socialist revolution. It's kind of a subgenre, it's great.

Like, for me, personally, in my opinion, the biggest crime in the whole Amblin pastiche The End of Oak Street is going for is that it can't do a messy family tableau, like the ones in Close Encounters or Poltergeist. Beyond the Black Rainbow was I think actually described by Panos Cosmatos as what he thought all the VHS movies he wasn't allowed to watch were like, so, yeah.

A Sentionaut in Beyond the Black Rainbow. I know that's unhelpful, sorry. He's a guy in a red suit and a red helmet standing in a mirrored room, reflected into infinity. Which isn't that much more helpful. The whole movie is like that, 10/10.
