The health of a democracy can be judged by the state and diversity of its local media. In the UK, with apologies to @bylinesnetwork.co.uk, they have all but disappeared as independent entities. Same in the US, where 1000s of titles have been bought by companies which run them into the ground.

My sister-in-law grew up in Puerto Rico. When I told her about Dolly Parton’s passing, she looked puzzled—no recognition of the golden voice or public persona—until her face lit up and she said, “Oh! The book lady!” I think Dolly would love to be remembered this way by a mother of two.

I live in a seaside village, Pringle Bay, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Pringle Bay is the start of the Whale Coast that stretches eastward to Hermanus, where whales come to give birth. Seeing them frolicking in the water is special, but sadly it’s “normal” - I don’t stop and stare.
