a while back I made a mod for Doom 3 as proof of concept for "this game would be better without cutscenes" in this scene the player walks into a room with a window behind which people are talking, and we get a cutscene of the player watching through the window. just let me look through the window!

Never forget that they had to spend trillions of dollars, build massive data centers, consume millions of galloons of water and insane amounts of electricity, just to kind of do what you can do better with your imagination and a cup of coffee. That's how envious they are of what you can do.

i gotta be honest, it feels like people complain about the price of video games and then end up buying it anyway. The cycle of FOMO is something the industry relies upon for people to buy games they either cant afford or morally don't want to buy. Gotta build up some skin against peer pressure

infographic with the title: "STOP FARMING ENGAGEMENT ON YOUR PERSONAL WEBSITE"

the rest says: "WEBSITES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE FOLLOWER COUNTS, YEARS OF ACTIVITY yet NO REAL-WORLD USE FOUND for having more audience that YOUR FRIENDS. Wanted to follow websites anyways for a laugh? We had a tool for that: it was called 'RSS FEEDS.' 'Yes please follow me on Neocities. Please follow me on Nekoweb. Statements dreamed up by the utterly Deranged."

Look at what webmasters have been demanding your respect for all this time, with all the web hosts & templates we built for them (these are real website, made by real webmasters):

[screenshots of website stats that don't matter]

quote saying: "Hello I would like 420691337 vistors please" is labeled as "They have played us for absolute fools"

I'm pregnant with a video game. The game idea came in me so now I'm pregnant with it and developing it. It's tough labor but my game pregnancy should be over in a couple of months. Please look forward to when I give birth to the game on Steam

I’m gonna be real. Believing that older video games require constant remakes in order to be enjoyed in the modern day is the same school of thought as needing a live action remake of an animated film in order to watch it. It’s just completely pointless most of the time.

Do you ever wonder if gamers in general are in too much of a rush to finish games? We are so focused on getting to the next game we sometimes don’t fully appreciate the current game right in front of us. Sometimes I need to remind myself that I can’t play everything, no matter how quick. 😂

Type out the code

Back in the day I read one of Zed Shaw's "Learn X the hard way" courses (I think it was his C++ course) and he began the course with a disclaimer that said something like "do not copy and paste the examples; type them out" because he believed strongly that doing so improved your comprehension of the material.

These days he recommends something even stronger:

> The best way to do this is when you complete an exercise delete what you did and do it again, but try to use your memory. If you get stuck then look at the exercise for clues, but try your best to recreate what you just did from memory. At first you'll be constantly referring to the exercise and the code, but eventually you'll get to where you can do it on your own. This will also improve your ability to remember more code, your ability to summarize how something works, and generally improve your skills faster than if you did it once and moved on.

This is known as the generation effect in cognitive psychology: the active generation of new content improves comprehension compared to passive consumption of the same material. Or as Richard Feynman put it: "What I cannot create, I do not understand".

I'm not a researcher, but I would still like to add my own spin as a lay programmer on why I believe this phenomenon matters for improving programming ability, even in the age of agentic coding. In fact, I think it's even more important now than ever for people to reacquaint themselves with this "ancient wisdom" because otherwise we'll end up with an entire generation of programmers wondering how anyone ever programmed without the help of a coding agent.

In this post I will lay out the case for why you should do the drudgery of occasionally typing out the code, character-by-character, as best as possible from memory. That doesn't mean that you should never use developer tools of any sort to accelerate the coding process, but you also need to occasionally do the boring parts by hand and by memory

Murder is scary bc a lot of video games are about doing murders, so if someone does murders irl then it could lead to them becoming a gamer. You're literally becoming desensitized to gaming when you do murders.

Black Ops 7 is a failure to be celebrated. It is the vanguard of the worst possible iteration of the game's industry and I pray its abject failure staves off a disastrous second half of the decade. Devs and players alike benefit from this game's poor sales. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6udz...

hot take but sometimes perceived issues with video games are actually just the result of not willing to engage with the game on its terms "oh this game is so broken" you say as you are deliberately trying to break a mission's scripting.

Still blows my mind that with HL:Alyx, valve shipped ALL of the map source files for the entire game. Wonder how something works in the SP campaign? You can just go load it up, and check out the scripting raw. It's sick.

I wish more level tools let you painlessly create shippable art right in the editor. This is barely over 10 minutes of work, no need to import or change programs or any reason, totally hassle-free, it's great.
