I've watched Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time in two decades. I have new insights. It really is an elaborately produced training video about the consequences of not following lab safety protocols, including IRB, proper PPE use, and new personnel training.

Another factor to take into consideration is the new rules from the OMB that limits status to four years. STEM program in the US that rely heavily on international students will need to find a way to accommodate that time limit.

Time to PhD in the UK: 3-4 years. The reason it takes longer in the US is the lack of focus during undergraduate studies and consequently a heavy course load in the first 1-2 years of the PhD.

**Alt text:**
Screenshot of a terminal-style ASCII roguelike game. The screen shows a dungeon map rendered with characters such as `#`, `.`, and `|`, forming rooms and corridors on a black background. The player character, represented by an `@` symbol, is located in a small room in the upper-left corner. Several rectangular rooms are connected by winding hallways across the map. Various symbols indicate objects, doors, monsters, or items, including `<`, `>`, `{`, and colored characters near the lower-right room. A brown horizontal line marks a doorway or corridor connection near the center of the map. Status information is displayed along the bottom: the character is named “Archie the Digger,” with attributes including Strength 14, Dexterity 8, Constitution 10, Intelligence 14, Wisdom 18, and Charisma 11. Additional statistics show dungeon level 1, 14 gold pieces, 13/13 hit points, armor class 9, and 1 experience point. The overall appearance is reminiscent of classic text-based dungeon exploration games such as NetHack or Rogue.

Congratulations to Dr. Parnal Joshi! Onward to your next adventure!

Five people sit around a wooden table in a dimly lit restaurant with tiled brick walls and a window lined with potted plants. Everyone is smiling toward the camera. On the table are drinks, menus, and a large pretzel dish with dipping sauces. Warm daylight comes through the window, creating a casual, friendly atmosphere.
Two people in academic regalia take a selfie during a graduation ceremony inside a large arena at Iowa State University. One person holds a red diploma tube while both smile at the camera. Rows of graduates in black caps and gowns fill the background, with spectators seated in the stands above.

A simple form interface on a white background with vertically stacked options. At the top are two radio button choices: “talk/poster” is selected with a filled blue circle, while “talk only” is unselected with an empty gray circle. Below them are two empty square checkboxes labeled “are you sure?” and “No backsies!”. The text is large, black, and left-aligned in a clean sans-serif font.

So some abstrsct chairs would rather see the submitter make the "no go" choice for themselves after given the poster option , rather than reject them because they may have made an error submitting.
110
Iddo Friedberg 🏁 𐤏𐤃𐤅 @iddux.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
True. But also see many who submit 'talk only' by mistake, or submit "talk only" without an extendsd abstract which means the submission cannot be considered for a talk.

Iddo Friedberg 🏁 𐤏𐤃𐤅 @iddux.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Also "talk only" submissions sometimes get accepted as posters if the COSI thinks they are topical and no other cosi wants them as talks either. The alternative is to reject them.

Iddo Friedberg 🏁 𐤏𐤃𐤅 @iddux.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Rob, email the chairs of the COSI you submitted to. ISMB gives the COSI chairs standard templates to mail, and it sounds like they messed up the template. It should be VERY clear.
