HOW I FAILED

I tried to fit the body of light into the body of darkness.
I tried to lengthen the last landscape.
I tried to unhinge and reconstruct
the language I had been given.
I tried to fit the body of darkness into the body of light.

That's as close as you'll ever get but she's already figured out how to appear in your dreams, just not yet, not until you've stopped being nervous at twilight. When Debussy felt his opera going nowhere, he let it. - Dean Young, “The Fox”
"The Fox" by Dean Young
Remember trying to feed the fox?
She said five feet is close enough.
Throw me something or put it on the ground and go away. She favored a front paw.
You sat down. She sat down so everything stopped, a wheel ceased squeaking, firecracker caught open-mouthed, the children froze around the hospital bed, a minor chord sustained who knows how, innumerable raindrops suspended midair becoming conscious of their fate to be dashed down, a song formed wholly at once just as wholly vanished, phosphenes, starworks, dustshop each must blunder off to in our time, freed of love, without fuss, our orders sketchy at best. Maybe one day the war will end. Already soldiers come home to hang themselves from rafters.
Their problem isn't having two hearts or a ghost marriage or their voice changing so they have to leave the chorus.
One day, the fox doesn't show.
That's as close as you'll ever get but she's already figured out how to appear in your dreams, just not yet, not until you've stopped being nervous at twilight. When Debussy felt his opera going nowhere, he let it.

this i think is the poem I’m most known for, and probably will be for the rest of my life
How to Live

Depravity begins with thinking of love

as a radical act. I quit loving

with difficulty. I love

easy now. Two parakeets on my shoulders.

They'll fly away if I move. So I move.

I love flight. I love cages

left wide open. I am not a window.

I could be a window. Open me,

you'll find a dense wood,

children wandering inside it.

Not lost children. They know the way.

They live the way horses run.

If they each had a bird in hand

they would open their hands.

I will be earth you be the flower
You have found my root you are the rain
I will be boat and you the rower
You rock you toss me you are the sea
How be steady earth that’s now a flood
The root’s the oar’s afloat where’s blown our bud
We will be desert pure salt the seed
Burn radiant sex born scorpion need

"... and when I was young I was mildly outrageous, and now I am completely, having seen in my brief forays into predictability that there's no percentage in it. Really, there isn't. I know you hope there is, but really, there isn't." —Irene McKinney, "Legs," from "Have You Had Enough Darkness Yet?"
Legs
by Irene McKinney, from "Have You Had Enough Darkeness Yet?"

I can prop my legs straight up the wall
while I'm lying in bed reading, or I can
bend them any which way whenever,
although I'm sixty-seven and "suffering"
from various conditions and diseases,
and I look in the mirror sometimes and
say "Hain't you cute" and that's the way
it is at this juncture. I have always been
careless because I never had

anything to lose, no money, no gorgeous
looks, no social position, no power,
no automatic respect from various
possible sources, and when I was young
I was mildly outrageous, and now I am
completely, having seen in my brief forays
into predictability that there's no percentage
in it. Really, there isn't. I know you hope
there is, but really, there isn't.
