Script Consultant: The deceptively simple power of Boolean logic (BBC Ideas)
How do you take a foundational mathematical concept like Boolean logic and explain it to a mass audience in under five minutes? I recently had the opportunity to work as the script consultant for the BBC Ideas animation, _The deceptively simple power of Boolean logic_ , narrated by Dr Katie Steckles and made in partnership with the Royal Society. My role was to ensure that while the complex mechanics of binary logic were distilled into clear, engaging concepts, the narrative maintained strict historical accuracy and mathematical integrity. The animation explores how George Boole managed to separate human thought from ambiguous language, turning logical arguments into mathematical statements that eventually became the bedrock of modern computing, search engines, and circuit boards. Crucially, the script highlights the often-overlooked story of Mary Everest Boole, a self-taught mathematician and pioneer of progressive education, who spent decades writing popular books to help children and adults understand the value of George’s work. It was a brilliant project to be involved with, balancing historical storytelling with everyday analogies (like cars and cupcakes) to show how a simple 19th-century idea completely reshaped our modern digital lives. ## Where to watch: You can watch the full animated short in the player below, or stream it via the official BBC Ideas YouTube Channel. ### Share this: * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * ### _Related_

I've got some availability coming up and Im looking to fill it! If something here makes it feel like I might meet a need you have, get in touch! #Freelancing #History #Maths #Writing #Education #Learning #Heritage #Work
A vertical promotional digital leaflet for Thomas K. Briggs, featuring a deep purple background with clean white typography and minimal icons.
At the top, the bold white header reads "Thomas K. Briggs", followed by the taglines "Exploring the intersection of mathematics, history, and education" and "Available for freelance work & commissions."
The center of the leaflet displays four distinct service pillars arranged in a grid with simple icons:
• Writing & Research (open book icon) covering books, articles, and studies.
• Talks & Outreach (microphone icon) covering schools, festivals, and public engagement.
• Museum Learning (classical museum building icon) covering consultancy, resources, and workshops.
• Education Projects (mortarboard hat icon) covering evaluation, CPD, tuition, and training.
Below the pillars are three circular graphics aligned horizontally: the book cover for "The Mathematicians' Library", a circular headshot of a smiling Thomas K. Briggs with glasses and shoulder-length brown curly hair, and a magenta QR code.
The bottom features the prominent website address: "tkbriggs.co.uk".

At open mic, the first band on, a pair of teenagers go to put their instruments down after one song. Host: "No, it's OK, you don't have to stop after one song, most people do 10 to 15 minutes." Band: "Fifteen minutes?! But we only know two songs! Fortunately the other one is American Pie."

Who's booked tickets for the Pseudorandom Ensemble gig? 21st September 2026, 18:15, £8, MathsWorld UK (London's Southbank) (I'll be there!) #LiveMusic #maths
Promotional poster for The Pseudorandom Ensemble at MathsWorld London, featuring Colin Beveridge, Sam Holloway, Sam Hartburn and Gavan Fantom. Against a pale background patterned with musical notes, the poster shows four musicians in mathematical T-shirts and a singer performing in front of a periodic-table-style display. Text describes “a musical journey through the highs, lows and medians of being a mathematician”, with detours into pentagonal tilings, squircles and square packing — and promises “maths, music” and plenty of exposition between songs.
