Flashback to this clearly confident ride into town. Note how the driver of the @dublinbusnews.bsky.social hung back & gave those cycling space to go about their journey. No aggressive tailgating or rushing to try & get past. 💚 The kids are the future! This should not be a rare scene on our streets.

The removal of cars from Parliament Street and Capel Street, while very welcome, has exposed the dearth of safe cycling routes across the river Liffey. Grattan Bridge is only the second bridge (after the Beckett) to have fully segregated two-way cycle routes.

We’d always suspect accidental or ignorance and give the benefit of the doubt but sometimes we too do wonder. In today’s case and with reports of a repeat as recently as an hour ago it does suggest it’s more antisocial than accidental.

We went down and removed every last screw we could find. This was one of our stops today. We suspect this is deliberate and antisocial rather than accidental - stay safe! A huge thank you to whoever cleared the others before we arrived!

We, along with the 30 other groups listed below, are appalled at the decision by Minister Seán Canney to abandon the much needed reform of the Road Safety Authority. The National Road Safety Strategy is in shambles and reform is urgently needed to save lives. @darraghobrientd.bsky.social
In April 2024, we expressed no confidence in the Road Safety Authority (RSA), believing it to be no longer fit for purpose. In August 2024 we welcomed the government’s proposed reform of the Road Safety Authority and are alarmed by the announcement today that the Minister for State for Road Safety Seán Canney is abandoning the reform process.
We remain firmly of the view that the Road Safety Authority as it is currently constituted is not fit for purpose and must be reformed. The independent report commissioned by Minister Jack Chambers last year clearly supports that reform. In response to the report, then Taoiseach Simon Harris said that we “need an agency dedicated wholly and exclusively to road safety and advocacy", and Minister James Lawless, said that "the failures of the organisation are evident from the report” and that “by reforming the RSA into an agency with a singular operational focus and establishing a standalone entity to deliver wider public interest activities, I believe we will realise substantial benefits with improved provision of key road safety services.”
All that has changed in the meantime is that more people have died, and more people have suffered life-changing serious injuries.
The National Road Safety Strategy is in shambles. The number of people killed on our roads this year to date has already exceeded the number killed for the entire year in 2024 and we could see the highest death toll in a decade by the end of the year. More people have been killed on motorcycles than in any year since 2007 and more people have been killed while walking, cycling and scooting than in any year since 2008.
Deaths and serious injuries among people walking and cycling consistently make up about 40% of all deaths and serious injuries over the last ten years - the most vulnerable road users, who present the least danger on our roads, are suffering the most serious consequences of our road safety failings.

The response from the Minister's representative at yesterday's meeting in Leinster House was shocking. It's very clear that this government is not taking road safety seriously and people will die as a result. www.fm104.ie/news/fm104-n...
Jason Cullen from the Dublin Commuter Coalition said a response from a staff member from the Junior Transport Minister, Sean Canney's office, during that presentation, was alarming.

"The clear indication that we got from the Minister's staff member there, was that it would be at least 18 months before we see any form of instruction to local county councils.

'When I pointed out to him that within that time 20 to 30 cyclists will probably have been killed on our roads due to the current trends that we're seeing, the response from him was that it is 'regrettable' that that will happen.

"It really took my breath away."
