We will never know or properly appreciate how many lives have been saved by librarians. The right book in the right hands at the right time. Astounding.

My dead tree version of A conventional boy by @cstross.bsky.social is finally shipping. Now I can see what everyone's been raving about. (I ordered it before Xmas, so forgot it was due this month)

I'm curious what these will taste like, since Twisties are usually cheese -flavoured extruded corn. Or chicken-flavoured.
A pink bag of Twisties Churros, marked "NEW" in top corner and a health star rating of 2 out of 5. "Sweet, fun and crunchy"

My books cartoon for this week’s @theguardian.com
Panel One.
Two figures walk up a hill in a park. One walks in front and the other is walking a dog

Front "My new year's resolution is to stop lending books"

Dog-walker "Really?"

Panel Two.
Front, becoming agitated
"It's just not worth the risk: cracked spines! Bent corners! Torn pages! Grubby fingers! Crumbs! Baths! Burglars! Rats! Children!! I can't allow such precious artefacts to fall into the careless hands of clumsy philistines!"

Panel Three.
Dog-walker "And how do the other librarians feel about this?"

Front "Less supportive Than I'd hoped."

I've just ordered 2 *more* books to add to my unfeasibly long to-read pile: A conventional boy by @cstross.bsky.social and Physics for cats by @tomgauld.bsky.social. Considering I've only got to the 2018 purchases in the pile, it'll be a while before I get to them. If only work didn't get in the way

I would read the hell out of a book series with a title like “All things wise and wonderful”, where a newly-qualified vet takes up a position in a country village only to discover that every single case he has to deal with is a magical creature and his partner in the vet practice is a dragon.

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com #science #mathematics
Caption
"A scientist undertaking high-risk calculations in the Hazardous Mathematics Laboratory"

Image
A scientist wears an armoured hazmat suit. His face is intense and sweat drips from his brow. His hands are encased in heavy duty gloves which reach into a metal box. He peers into the box through heavy-duty perspex at a notebook in which he is making complex calculations with a biro.

I've been ill, so hadn't been to the comic shop in 4 months. When I did get there I found the 1st 4 issues of a new title from AWA by @straczynski.bsky.social called U & I. I don't recall seeing any promotion for it, though it's pretty good and set in the Resistance universe.

I love that the British Library catalogue record for The nightmare stacks by @cstross.bsky.social has these subject headings. I fancy a novel set in Leeds, here's one... Also, should I read Escape from Yokai Land before The delirium brief, or after?
BL online catalogue record for The Nightmare stacks only has subject headings: Fiction/Thrillers/Espionage
and
Leeds (England) -- Fiction

Back home recuperating from surgery. I don't think trying to finish @cstross.bsky.social's Nightmare stacks was a good idea with hindsight; the last 4-5 ch. were a slog, with disaster after disaster ending with a massacre of cosplayers. 😜1/2
