It's not even the ethics of it. My career, my hobbies, my free time, hell, my whole life took off once I fully left Twitter. It is a place to go if you want to be stuck in a neverending race war feedback loop. Like not using ChatGPT, not using Twitter is a superpower. Remain employable; stay off it.

Not only no culture, but no *commons*. The dependency on the capitalist overlords will be complete, because you can’t ask for help or context from others when there is no common frame of reference. This has already happened in coding, the first space where they destroyed the commons we’d all built.

Character design work by Katsuhiro Otomo for Harmagedon (1983), dir. Rintaro, Madhouse/Project Team Argos This job was Otomo's first in the anime industry, and the realistic style he used here had a huge impact on other artists

Public Domain Art is the lifeblood of small tabletop rpgs, but it can be a nightmare trying to find the right art and license. This week, I’ve re-uploaded my old list from 2020 (with updates) of public domain websites. That's 500,000+ public domain paintings, photos, maps, and film. Link below 🔗👇

Man, this Humphrey Jennings book keeps hitting me w lines like these. Especially troubling that that writing, the magic of words, ‘the poets raw material’, is now threatened as well by the forces of philistine capitalists. Class war feels more like a 3 century rout and I’m fed up w it

I hate post-credits scenes. It's not Avengers Initiative o'clock anymore, and I'm not a little child who needs a happy meal toy about the next movie/season at the end of the credits. Put scenes in the goddam thing the scenes are supposed to be in

Nick Park spent the '80s making A Grand Day Out mostly alone. It was a school project that got out of hand -- he wanted to quit many times. But Park stuck with it and fulfilled his dream of bringing a cinematic feel to stop motion. We explore: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/wallace-an...

Man oh man, I noticed this donkey figure and asked my dad if he knew what the story was w it. “I sure do” he said, “it was your grandfather’s toy. I can’t imagine how he kept hold of it and brought it here.” What a funny sentimental object. Quite moving really! The fact that “toy” is singular too…

For #AncientSiteSunday the #Hellenistic theatre at Pergamon, #Türkiye, built in the 3rd century BC, alterations were made in the #Roman period. It's one of the steepest known ancient theatres. The capacity was about 10,000 spectators. 📷️ C. Bredfeldt 🏺
A full shot of the ruins of an ancient theatre, located on a hillside.  The theatre's steep tiered seating structure is clearly visible, constructed of light gray stone blocks, weathering evident in various tones. The hillside surrounding the theatre is covered with grass, creating a contrast between the man-made stone structures and the natural landscape. Sections of crumbling stone walls and foundations are scattered throughout the grassy slopes.

This is a useful thread. I want to examine "AI tools are power". The UN Scientific Panel report used this framing to promote the concept of a "digital divide", but that presumes that the power is neutral. I argue that it is fundamentally asymmetric, more a tool of empire, oligarchy, and scammers.
