In our latest, @kaytiburt.bsky.social reports on the fallout around an anonymous document that identified remnants of Claude in popular fanfics. While the doc's authors and many of the fics were from Heated Rivalry, it's a far bigger problem than a single fandom: fansplaining.com/heated-rival...
Text reading: “Fandom Has A Hidden Generative AI Problem” gives shape to a breakdown in a basic social contract for online fandom and all online community and discourse. While fanfiction writing is generally pseudonymous, readers have historically at least been able to rely on the assumption that a fellow human being is writing the story they are reading. With the introduction of AI, that fundamental pact between fic writer and fic reader has been fractured. Fandom is a place for people to be in community together—to bond over shared obsessions in a way that can make us feel a little less alone. Realizing someone has outsourced that connection to a machine can make us feel even more alone.

Jonathan Joss--voice actor of John Redcorn from King of the Hill, and Ken Hotate from Parks and Rec--was killed in a homophobic hate crime today. I'm so angry.
Statement from Tristan Kern de Gonzales
Husband of Jonathan Joss

My husband Jonathan Joss and I were involved in a shooting while checking the mail at the site of our former home. That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done.

Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic.

When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw.

While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired.

Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life.

Jonathan is my husband. He gave me more love in our time together than most people ever get. We were newlyweds. We picked Valentines Day. We were in the process of looking for a trailer and planning our future.

He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other.

I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved.

To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family.

My focus now is on protecting Jonathan’s legacy and honoring the life we built together.

If your concern is how someone coped with trauma or how loudly they speak when recounting injustice and being ignored by authorities then you never truly cared about my husband.

Jonathan saved my life. I will carry that forward. I will protect what he built.

This is what the commodification of fandom looks like. Traditional publishing is exploiting fandom and fans. Using them to promote and pay for the art they’ve already read for free. Setting fanfic writer up for possible lawsuits and forever binding them and their the work to a bigot. #Romancelandia
Promotional material for Irresistible urge to fall for your enemy by Brigitte Knightly, which is the published title of what was once a popular Harry Potter fan fiction featuring a romance between Hermione and Draco. Promotional material gives a breakdown of the “Dramoine ship” its online popularity making the books origins not only clear but a selling point of the book.

FROM THE HARRY POTTER SERIES.
For those who may not know, Draco was one of the antagonists and Hermione was one of the three main characters of the series.
Like with any fandom, people wonder, "What if these two characters got together?" And since Draco and Hermione are complete opposites, and because everyone loves a good enemies-to-lovers story, naturally, this was a fan-favorite pairing.
The emergence of Dramione skyrocketed within the fanfiction community, which led to several published adaptions, including the forthcoming Alchemised by SenLinYu, adapted from Manacled, setting us up to break out Brigitte Knightley at just the right time.

NEW YORK, April 17, 2025 - More than fifty NYU faculty members have taken their classes off campus starting today, and continuing for the next week, to protest the University's lack of commitment to protect international students in the face of the Trump administration's attacks. Some faculty have moved their classes to in-person locations that have been declared sanctuary spaces, where international students are assured that building administrators will do everything in their power to refuse to cooperate with ICE agents. Other faculty have moved their classes online so that students can attend from a safe location of their choosing.
