📰 Today’s Sunday Times exposes just a fraction of the attacks on jobs in Universities. We know the true picture across the UK is even worse. With record student sign ups this situation is completely untenable. The government must intervene.
This table describes the level of job losses in several universities across the UK.

Damn, lots of stuff is coming out on Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) slowdown. Earlier this month, the Xing et al. paper (link in comment) observed it, then another work indicated it's going to go down by 50%. 🧪🌊 Link: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.…
Comparison of OC methods applied to the future AMOC.
Comparison of four OC methods with the MMM method applied to the 2091-to-2100 mean AMOC using either a single observable variable (left columns in solid) or multiple observable variables (right columns in dashed). The scenario considered is SSP2-4.5. linear regression stands for unregularized linear regression, while ridge regression stands for ridge-regularized linear regression. (A) Comparison of the estimates of the different methods and the 90% model uncertainty (±1.64 the SD). (B) Comparison of the mean leave-one-out error, of the different methods. The definition and difference between the model uncertainty and the leave-one-out error can be found in Materials and Methods. The best method in terms of leave-one-out error is shown in bold.

This is a major problem. Certain high-status institutions are hoovering up students for whom they don't have space or teaching capacity. It's not good for students, it's driving other universities to disaster and it has none of the benefits of either a planned or a "market" system.

Cultural ideas are inextricably entwined with the people who do science, the questions they ask, the assumptions they hold and the conclusions they land on.
