Exhilarated to share a 2nd @science.org cover article this month from our lab @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social! A collaboration with US & Mexico colleagues on the role of a Mexican biogeographic holding pen in shaping the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI)(1/11) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Cover of Science magazine for July 30, 2026. Caption from Science reads: A three-dimensional rendering shows the land bridge connection between North and South America. Research on the fossil record of mammals in Mexico suggests that the geographic region acted as a biodiversity “holding pen” for 10 million years, buffering the pace of both northward and southward movements of mammal species leading up to the Great American Biotic Interchange.

Pangolins are pursued globally but what regions are most implicated in trafficking? By decoding DNA from museum specimens & seizures, this study reveals hidden #pangolin trade routes & #trafficking hotspots, to inform disruption of the global illegal wildlife trade @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4tkYRDO
Top: A white-bellied pangolin displayed in a local market along a national road extension in Nimba County, Liberia. The animal was kept alive for sale, reflecting consumer preference for freshly slaughtered meat and the impact of road development on wildlife trade. Image credit: Sylvatrop Consulting. Bottom: Origin tracing of traded white-bellied pangolins (Phataginus tricuspis). Detailed origin tracing maps for (left) Upper Guinea, and (right) Congolia cluster regions. Training locations are red diamonds and seized samples (black circles) are linked to their inferred origins (gray crosses) via gray (domestic) or purple (international) lines. The heatmap highlights likely sourcing density, with red indicating hotspots and heatmap bounds reflecting bootstrap confidence. Base layers include country, road (orange) and port (blue triangles) data from Natural Earth, protected areas (green) from the World Database on Protected Areas, and the modeled species’ range from occurrence data previously collated.

[📃Article] The Hidden Power of Citations What if citations were choices that shape science? Citing builds knowledge but also visibility and power. 🔧 fairpub helps reveal biases in your references Read the article: bit.ly/4cJzJlm 🧪🌐
The more visible a journal is, the more submissions it attracts; the more articles it publishes, the more it is cited. This feedback loop helps consolidate the dominance of the most prestigious journals, often for-profit.
In response to this observation, postdoctoral researchers and data scientists at Cesab propose the idea of a “virtuous circle.” Without ever compromising scientific rigor, the aim would be to cite more articles—whenever possible—from “academic-friendly” journals, in order to increase their visibility.

After ethical consumption, why not consider a form of ethical citation?
