It would be nice if we, as a people, could criticize bad government policy and bad political actors without getting extremely weird and conspiracy theoretical about it <rubbing my temples trying to abjure a migraine>

It's an easy no if you actually look at the uphill battle and the various costs associated with it. And I hate DTE! The SEU is a much better bet, and it carries substantially less risk.

It kinda feels like we're on the cusp of a golden age for immersive gameplay; so many shows at a variety of budget levels in Asia, it feels like a pillar of the reality TV ecosystem. With Jubensha exploded out of the first wave, I'm excited to see how this new wave fans out into the general public.

Incredible business, you're hearing it more and more! They can't operate at a profit, so there's nothing to amortize the vast training costs against.

2026. Week 4. Indiana.
Guardian column by Adrian Chiles, edited to look like it's from Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles.

The headline, unchanged, says: "When I want to feel loved, I just go to a hardware store."

The subhed, slightly modified, says: "All I wanted is someone to help me get good at quarterbacking without treating me with contempt. Thank goodness for those small, independent coordinators – they nail it every time."

The picture in the article has been replaced with a photograph of Chip Kelly standing in an empty football stadium, wearing a hard hat.

The article is filed under the category "Opinion: Shops and Shopping" and is dated Fri 25 Sep 2026 20.00 EDT.

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.
The Ebola virus doesn’t need to spill back. It abides in its reservoir host, and awaits its next opportunity. A virus can’t climb out of a bat or a monkey and fly off in search of human prey. It can only spill over. If humans left the reservoir host alone — not hunting it, not capturing it, not eating it, not exporting it live, not disturbing its forest habitat — the virus wouldn’t re-emerge in humans. It would remain where it is, harming no one. But of course that’s not what happens. And when viruses spill, they often spill into us, because the human population is such a big, busy target.

Was in Ontario to see aespa, and it was pretty epic. They are truly excellent live. The pivot to a sort of cyberpunk-horror theme for their "lore" bits between sets starting a couple years ago could not have landed at a better time 😂 My KPop bucket list inches closer to completion!
A marquee-style sign at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, that reads "AESPA"

<poking the Madring F1 race>: "do something" I don't understand how a purpose-designed course can be this uneventful? We have "uneventful Spanish Grand Prix" at home (Barcelona-Catalunya)! Extremely irritating to have Spa-Francorchamps drop to a rotational circuit for this! #formula1 #f1

Was delighted to hear @edzitron.com bring up some Adam Curtis in his recent monologue "Managing the Situation" :). I have found Adam Curtis's deeply weird little documentaries immensely valuable as we slide into unmanaged situations.
