The only fungus I saw the other day during some pretty cold temperatures! 🥶. Identified as an Octospora, probably O. musci-muralis growing with its host the common cushion-forming moss Grimmia pulvinata. 🍄‍🟫 🌿
Growing with Grimmia pulvinata on a bridge. There was an abundance of lichens here! Smaller fruiting body.Eight large spores in a row.Hydrated fungus and moss under the microscope.

Waxcap 42 - Date Waxcap (Hygrocybe spadicea). A very shy fruiting species so not often encountered and also restricted to the better sites. Stipe is yellow with brown fibrils, gills generally yellow but can be orange. The brown conical cap is incredibly distinctive!

Waxcap 43 - Dune Waxcap (Hygrocybe conicoides). Although not useful for CHEGD grassland assessments, good to know this species exists. Red conical cap that blackens only slightly, generally at the tip. Grows in coastal sand dunes with acuticonica and members of the conica agg.

Wow, wow, wow: Mycena pseudocorticola and, finally, Mycena meliigena, occurring together on moss-covered oak branches in quantity (this is just a small section). A friend spent years looking for M. meliigina every time she came across M. pseudocorticola! [Rushmere CP, Bucks]

Waxcap 33 - Nitrous Waxcap (Neohygrocybe nitrata). The name comes from the smell, very strong of swimming pool chlorine. Cap colour varies from grey to nearly black and overall size is also really variable. The stipe is generally a bit chunky. An uncommon species.

3/11/25 Cumbria - I've historically disregarded the excitement associated with descriptions of white forms of Ballerina #Waxcap (Porpolomopsis calyptriformis f. nivalis) because they often fade with time Well that all changed today, this pair of fresh examples almost completely lacking color

Waxcap 20 - Jubilee Waxcap (Gliophorus reginae). One of our rarest species and an absolute stunner 😍 Only named in 2012 and from a British specimen, the name comes from it then being the Jubilee. Colours differ from Parrot and gill attachment from Heath. Only in our best unimproved grasslands.

It's waxcap season - fungi of nutrient poor grasslands that tend to peak in late autumn. This is the Date Waxcap, Hygrocybe spadicea, from grassland within the Balmoral estate. It is a rare species and an indicator of high quality fungi (CHEGD) grassland. #FungiFriday
