We're in the College Valley for our next place to highlight this #NationalTreeWeek. The trees at the north end of the valley are known as the Collingwood Oaks. They were planted by the wife of Vice-Admiral Lord Collingwood, who took command of the fleet after Nelson died at the Battle of Trafalgar.

'Bastle' - a ‘fortified farmhouse’. It comes from the French word ‘bastille’ meaning stronghold. Owners would take refuge from the raids from the Border Reivers and soldiers, housing livestock on the lower floor and living above them. On your next visit, stop by Woodhouses Bastle near Harbottle.
