If you study plankton, you’ll definitely come across polychaete (bristle worm) larvae, and today is a great day to recognise them, because it’s International Polychaete Day! #marineplankton 🦑 #wormwednesday

Usually its ladybird or hoverfly larvae that are eating the aphids I'm trying to identify, however on the Oak I was looking at today I found the nymph of an ant-mimicking bug, Pilophorus perplexus. I potted it to photograph, and within a few hours it had moulted into an adult!

Before Richard South's two volumes on moths in the Wayside & Woodland series finally settled the Macro/Microlepidoptera distinction, the bagworms (Psychidae) were often treated as Macrolepidoptera - as here in Charles Barrett's British Lepidoptera

Marble Screw-moss (Syntrichia papillosa) growing abundantly on old blackthorn (?) branches. Found in the same location as the last post. 🌱 Close up inspection of the leaves clearly shows the gemmae (which are apparently baby mosses!) on the leaves. @bbsbryology.bsky.social #mosses #bryophytes

🍄‍🟫 Another parasitic fungus that frequents mossy walls (photos from back in December): I've identified this one as Arrhenia retiruga, with the common name Small Moss Oysterling according to #iNaturalist. Seems to like the common cushion moss #Grimmia as a host which it parasites upon.
