Comparison of state pension in G7 shows that the UK state pension is the least generous. Countries have wide variance in how retirement incomes are funded and how returns are calculated. Purists might want more nuanced data but this is what we have. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

The Scottish Green Party supports Ukraine
We publish below the policy passed by the Scottish Green Party at its 2023 Autumn Conference. The party is affiliated to and works with Ukraine Solidarity Campaign Scotland, and its co-leader Ross Greer is one of USCS's sponsors. You can contact USCS, and via it Green Ukraine Solidarity activists in Scotland, at uscscotland@gmail.com. Preamble In the light of the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the genocidal nature of that invasion, it is important that the Scottish Green Party affirms its support for the Ukrainian people in resisting that invasion, and for those progressive civil society organisations working to defend women, children, minorities and the environment in extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

Had to revisit my David Litvinoff book ahead of teaching at Arvon next week and I’m struck by the enduring relevance of his strange, melancholic, perceptive article about a fascist rally in Ridley Road in 1949. He’s describing the very same swaggering thugs we see terrorising migrants today.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.
