Me gustaría enviar un mensaje a la comunidad latinoamericana de Canadá en este momento difícil.

Como ya se ha visto tantas otras veces, Estados Unidos ha llevado a cabo una intervencion violenta en un país de América Latina.

Esto es un ataque contra los principios más básicos de la soberanía y el derecho internacional frente al imperialismo. Estados Unidos no tiene derecho a imponer su voluntad a América Latina – ni tampoco a Canadá.

Conozco un poco la historia del imperialismo estadounidense en los territorios latinoamericanos. Viví en Argentina en 2001, en medio de las ruinas de una crisis económica creada por las élites locales con la ayuda del FMI y Washington. Fue una época de movimientos populares, y también de horrible represión.

La dictadura de los años 70 estaba justo debajo de la superficie. Muchos de los responsables nunca se habían ido. Y no solamente en Argentina, las acciones fascistas llenaron de sangre las venas ya abiertas de esta América Latina, (El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Chile…).

Muchos de ustedes vinieron a Canadá como resultado de esos años terribles, y sé que aún están muy presentes para ustedes, especialmente en semanas como esta.

Canadá es hoy un país más fuerte, más vibrante y más solidario gracias a ustedes, y las contribuciones que aportan a nuestras comunidades y lugares de trabajo cada día.

Por último, quiero que sepan que estamos reconstruyendo el NPD en este momento. Necesitamos un partido de izquierda que luche por un Canadá que sea un refugio contra el fascismo y que no participe en el imperialismo. Por ejemplo, mi plataforma incluye una politica exterior independiente de la politica exterior estadounidense, especialmente con respecto a Israel.

Y necesitamos su valentía, su capacidad organizativa y su sabiduría generacional.

Por favor, únanse a mí y al partido antes del 28 de enero para votar por el liderazgo. Voten por mi para ser el nuevo lider del NDP.
