Doris “Dorie” Miller was born on this day in 1919 in Waco, Texas. Because of his heroism during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he became the first African American recipient of the Navy Cross. His bravery spurred civil rights activists to push to desegregate the U.S. military. /1
