Participated in a rally yesterday to ask @ucdavis.bsky.social for safer roads for cyclists on campus after we lost Lincoln Sabini in a car/bike collision on campus in April this year and Tris Yasay in a collision with a trash truck 2022.
A group of people gathered in front of an outdoor steps holding rally signs on a sunny day with blue sky surrounded by an urban tree canopy listening to a person holding a speech.

Generally agree with you. Air travel is the likely exception where technohopium promises (batteries, SAFs, hydrogen) are really far away from existing at any kind of useful scale and quite likely never will as OP points out for batteries.

Diesel is $6.41 a gallon in Pennsylvania as of Wednesday, and those higher prices mean more expensive transportation for a long list of everyday goods.

This one seems worth repeating. It’s nothing to cheer about though, as the proceeds of ridiculous gas prices fuelled by irrational wars and rampant car dependency go to oil companies instead of to the public as useful carbon taxes. #UrbanTruth

three wheels handles and steers very differently, much less nimble. Some people prefer this. Two wheels handles like a bike, you can lean in the corners, and you adjust to the fact that your front wheel is slightly further ahead in no time. Low center of mass helps a lot with extra weight.

Recommend class 1 frontloader cargo bike, initially thinking it would be my grocery bike. I now ride it everywhere locally . Bosch motor/belt drive is great. Some have front suspension which helps on US roads. Low center of mass and just 2 wheels handles like a bike, not a bakfiets. Good luck!

Amazing #bikesky thread this. 5400 miles in two years, $31 in charging costs; would have been $750 for an electric car and double that in gasoline. Saving much, much more on financing, insurance and maintenance, obviously. Families should have one car for long trips (and endless bikes)

Agreed! Although there is a very clear cost-savings to be had compared to owning multiple cars. Almost everyone in a (sub)urban setting takes short local trips - and they do not need to be by car. What is often missing is the infrastructure to make it safe.

Enabling this choice by investing in a network of protected active mobility infrastructure separate from cars and from sidewalks benefits everyone: fewer cars on city streets means less pollution, less congestion, and more safety, better public health, and more fun ;-) 15/15

An e-assist makes it so easy for people of a wide range of ages and abilities to travel many of their local trips by active mobility transportation options instead of by car, provided the local infrastructure is safe (=physically protected from cars). 14/15

Cars are dangerous for people outside of them, they are LOUD, they pollute the air and water (microplastics from tire wear for starters), which is a significant public health concern. Plus, cars require a TON of public space to drive and park that all of us subsidize indirectly. 13/15

Mark Huising @huisinglab.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Important broader context: I can afford to live close to where I work, which should be normal, but isn't. There are enormous affordable housing and public transit aspects to consider here that I do not want to ignore but also cannot change on my own - unlike my own transportation choices. 12/15

Now my family (5) still owns a car and we drive it for around 5000 miles each year - out of city trips. Splitting our car miles evenly between both drivers in my household, I used my e-bike for approximately 50% of my land-based miles. 10/15

Mark Huising @huisinglab.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
This means that this spending generates no tax revenue for the city, which is saddled with the enormous cost of maintaining roads for cars to drive local trips that are crumbling as cars get heavier and heavier 9/15

With the exception of money spent at local repair shops and insurance middlemen, this amounts to hundreds of millions hemorrhaging from our local economy, no longer available for residents to save, invest in home ownership, or spend at their discretion in local restaurants, bars, and shops. 8/15

That's 1.5 times our entire city budget, each year, spent on vehicles that costs over 50k MSRP on average, financing one of the most rapidly depreciating asset known to man, insurance from national brokers, fuel from large oil companies or IOU's and maintenance/repairs often at car dealerships. 7/15

The larger cost of car ownership for Davis residents is $15,366. In Davis alone, across 25,322 households that on average own 1.72 cars, we spend 389 million USD to finance, insure, maintain and fuel cars (in that order). 6/15

Mark Huising @huisinglab.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Had the car still been powered by an internal combustion engine, I would have used around 245 gallons of gas to drive those 5400 miles, which in CA today would have cost me $1367 dollars. 5/15

Mark Huising @huisinglab.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Had I taken a car for these trips - as most Americans do - I would have used around 1870 kWh, if the car was electric. I would have had to pay PG&E around $750 - equivalent to four months of electricity for the average CA resident in Yolo county, assuming I charged at home. 4/15

Mark Huising @huisinglab.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
For all of these trips, 5400 miles, I used around 77 kWh of electricity. That is slightly more than a single charge for a typical US EV battery, at an electricity cost of around $31 dollars to travel a cumulative distance of Davis to Washington DC and back. 3/15
