Every time my students express admiration for a particular dreamy indie-game creator, I make them pull up their webpage and show them the back catalog of obscure and/or barely finished games on which they rest. I point at that game design "remainder" and ask why they aren't designing *those* rn.

the secret about adventure writing is that it is, imo, maybe even more technical than writing rules or classes. a ttrpg adventure product is not a narrative, it's an instruction manual walking the reader through GMing a session the way the author might, in accordance with the author's sensibilities

Even the biggest TTRPG is still niche to regular folks. I had to get some documents notarized on Sat. and the friendly bank worker asked what my company does. I said "I make roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons." and there was ZERO recognition. Just a polite smile, nod, and "Oh, that's nice..."
