So happy to share our paper! We tackle a long-standing question: what shapes dominant microbiome signatures? Using synthetic gut communities, we uncovered a synergy between Enterobacteriaceae and dietary components that promotes Segatella copri in gut microbiomes. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Synergy between Enterobacteriaceae and diet mediates competition between dominant Bacteroidales in the human gut - Nature Microbiology
Multiomic experiments using defined and native gut communities reveal that complex dietary glycans mediate the dominance of Prevotellaceae in non-industrialized gut metagenomes through signalling-medi...

Come be our colleague. I have been in this Division for 27 years (4 as a postdoc and 23 as a PI). It is an amazing place to work, collaborate, and be inspired. If you are applying to be an Assistant or Associate Professor this Fall, don't miss this deadline.

(1/6) Thrilled to share this story! In our preprint from my PhD in the @kranzuschlab.bsky.social, with help from the Hatfull lab and @soreklab.bsky.social, we discover RyDEP, a phage-encoded RyR-domain glycosidase that allows phages to evade Thoeris defense. Highlights below! doi.org/10.64898/202...

Small RNA promotes negative feedback of the master virulence regulator PhoP by repressing the PhoQ sensor enhancer UgtL in acidic pH | mSphere
To cause disease, pathogens must express their virulence genes at the right time and in proper levels. Here, we establish that a small RNA (sRNA) restricts the activation of a regulator critical for t...

From lab reagent to metabolite: the riboswitch ligand guanidine as a relevant compound in bacterial physiology | Journal of Bacteriology
More than two decades ago, the first naturally occurring mRNA elements regulating gene expression by directly binding target ligands, termed riboswitches, were discovered in bacteria (1–4). Since then, more than 55 classes of riboswitches have been characterized (5, 6), advancing our general knowledge of gene regulation and stress response, but also unveiling unexpected biological roles for compounds whose relevance had remained elusive. A notable example is the discovery of riboswitches recognizing c-di-AMP and c-AMP-GMP (7, 8), which hinted at important biological functions for the two molecules that were later revealed to act as second messengers in key cellular processes such as biofilm formation, chemotaxis, sporulation, and virulence (9–11).
