More in honor of this fall season than in rebuke to our idiot president, here's one of Anne Carson's translated Sappho fragments: 'As a sweet apple turns red in a high branch, high on the highest branch and the applepickers forgot-- well, no, they didn't forget--were not able to reach...'

As a USian whose top politicial issue since 1988 has been climate mitigation, I feel grievously damaged that the demarcation line for improved policy in 2026 is whether or not my leaders support invading Greenland with acetylene torches.

Picture what a different world we might have if human visual range extended into the near IR and CO2 scattered toward red frequencies. At the very least, motorways would be spectacular.

I'm intrigued by how carefully this text avoids describing mosquito sensing of CO2 as "seeing." Context-dependent effects of carbon dioxide on cross-modal integration during mosquito flight | Scientific Reports share.google/ri4EGvMDCP4E...
In a natural environment, mosquitoes heavily utilize CO₂ and visual cues to detect and approach humans. Mosquitoes are activated upon detection of CO₂ in human breath. CO₂ subsequently modulates mosquitoes’ steering responses to moving vertical bars and enhances attraction to visual features although dark contrast is inherently attractive.

The riverside city near me has three bridges. The northern one was widely known as the 'old bridge,' the southern one as the 'new bridge,' and the middle one as the 'old new bridge.' Then a few decades ago the old bridge got rebuilt and we lost all common reference.

"...Not related to American annexation." www.theguardian.com/world/2026/a...
Larry Swets, Greenland Energy’s chair and a big shareholder, appears to enjoy access to Trump’s circle. He has said the oil project is “not related to American annexation”.

After a company representative falsely claimed at a Jameson Land community meeting in June that it had permission to land drilling equipment, Swets said: “Our enthusiasm for the project led us to communicate in a way that created confusion.”

But the next month, local people in the sparsely populated region noticed a tug pulling a barge shorewards and unloading a dozen containers

I beleive this gets at the key issue of our time. I keep thinking of what dynamics caused our political timelines to fork when critical majority support walked away from Hillary Clinton in 2016, Kamala Harris in 2022, and Janet Mills in 2026.

While impressive, this is just one more example of what I've seen @hannahpingree.bsky.social do many, many times: build winning coalitions to get difficult things done. She absolutely has what it takes to be a great Governor. #MEpolitics

Just cast my ballot this morning. My rankings were based on my estimation of the candidates' relative potential strength in the general election. For me, @hannahpingree.bsky.social rises broadly to the top by that measure. But I can understand how others may calculate that differently #MEpolitics

The Trump Administration has made a grave decision to ignore science and disregard the real impacts of climate change. By moving to abandon the EPA’s “endangerment finding”, they are opening the door to more pollution, more extreme weather, and more harm to our health and our economy...
