when i said "let people enjoy things" that was for the lowbrow slop that I enjoy, which is a fun but slightly guilty pleasure. it was not for the lowbrow slop that you enjoy, which is an indictment of your moral character

I still kinda miss checking Dresden Codak every couple of days to confirm it still hadn't updated <3 - Starslip, Girl Genius, Gunnerkrigg Court. God, and probably another two dozen and more. I know they're all still there: but I'm afraid to go back and check in case I realize my favs were bad lol

2) "Ah but he *said* they would improve the economy." So did Harris. They both said that. If people voted for Trump because he said he would improve the economy, it means they preferentially chose to believe the pathological liar despite all evidence to the contrary.

I'm sure it's actually a fairly boring error (normal hair-rending frustration of modding) But I like to imagine a world so full of mangos there's no space for people

Sorry to necro an old thread (just finished the published book very late last night and wanted to look at this map again) Is Las Vegas part of the glasslands (or a similar area)? Reading the book I wasn't thinking about it and I suppose I thought it was ruins

Since ~2018ish I just bite the bullet and pay for a new battery once it's at about 75% max life (sure doesn't feel like 80% of max! Feels like 60% but I'm not going to argue with the number)

Story time! Six years ago, my first book, The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking), came out. It was fun to write! I got to share all my cosmology fun facts and dig deep into all the ways the universe might end. I had SO much fun with it, I thought, "maybe I should write another book?" 1/?

100%. "narrative coherence" turns out to be one of those things that it's better to have than not but ultimately isn't a make-or-break thing for your movie being good if its firing on all the other cylinders bsky.app/profile/anim...

my layman's understanding is that in 2026 solar wind and batteries are good enough that opening new plants doesn't really pencil unless we find a way to safely make them much cheaper but if you ever want to spiral, think about the timeline where older ones never closed.

There are so many, but one of my favorites I've been thinking about lately is "Museum Guard" by Duane Hanson It's an incredibly lifelike fiberglass sculpture of a guard placed in the corner of this room in Kansas City's big art museum. It's hard to articulate how REAL he feels.
A totally normal and very much alive (and surely he's not actually a statue right?) uniformed late middle aged security guard standing watch in a corner of a room.

There is a large abstract geometrical piece to his right which continues out of frame

What are your thoughts on Ian W Toll's history of the war in the Pacific? I see it in your bibliography and just finished book 2. I've been really enjoying it but I don't know where it sits among other histories of that era or what it might leave out of focus.

I definitely have become a lot more cosmopolitan chauvinist in a way that I know is sort of problematic, but I just don't see any way around it. If you allow the provincially minded too much autonomy they inevitably regress and start trying to burn witches, they need minding by their betters.

Oh my god I'd love to see the "drugged and kidnapped into heroism" scene as the Act 2 -> Act 3 transition in her story "I am killing one of the few people who brings me joy as we walk into this dark future for the slim hope that he saves everyone"

Kennedy is going to have a larger death toll to his name when all is said and done, and those deaths may carry on far longer into the future than Miller's. Miller is Hitler. Kennedy is Pestilence, Horseman of the Apocalypse.

the basic reality is that this court has already destroyed the united states as a functional republic and none of the reforms necessary to rebuild it will survive the court as it currently exists any democrat not committed to expanding the court is not serious about fixing this country

Just took a photo of these two earlier today at the National Portrait Gallery And for additional context, these two are prominently displayed directly opposite each other

Douglas MacArthur 1880-1964
Born Little Rock, Arkansas
Commander of American land forces in the Pacific at the outbreak of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur suffered the worst defeat of his career in the spring of 1942, when he was forced to flee the Philippines in the wake of Japanese invasion.
Uttering on his arrival in Australia his famous words,
"I shall return," MacArthur now faced the task of repelling Japan's drive for dominion in the southwest Pacific. His success in that effort, combined with his own genius for self-promotion in the press, made him one of the most popular heroes of the war back in civilian America. By the time he made good on his promise to retake the Philippines in spring 1945, his reputation had reached legendary proportions, and the following September, he was chosen to preside over Japan's final surrender.
Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952)
Oil on canvas, c. 1952
Gift of Henry Ostrow

I'm so sorry I cut off the Spanish, but I genuinely meant this as a personal photo. I didn't think it'd be relevant. Descriptive plaque for photo in prior comment

Dwight D. Eisenhower 1890-1969
Born Denison, Texas
With a talent for military strategy and the ability to work effectively with personalities of all types, General Dwight D. Eisenhower proved uniquely suited for the role of supreme commander during World War II. A career army officer, Eisenhower began his wartime service in 1941 as head of the War Plans Division under General George C.
Marshall. He was assigned to lead U.S. forces in Britain in the spring of 1942, and later commanded the Allied forces' invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy (1942-43). Named supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force by President Franklin Roosevelt in December 1943, Eisenhower masterminded the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and directed Allied operations in Europe until the surrender of Germany in May 1945. Enormously popular with the American public after the war, Eisenhower was elected to the presidency in 1952 and served two terms.
Thomas E. Stephens (1886-1966)
Oil on canvas, 1947
Gift of Ailsa Mellon Bruce
NPG.65.63

I'm sorry I cut the Spanish off when I took the photos. I meant them for personal use only and didn't think they would be relevant.

The byronic over-dramatic impressionist General Douglas MacArthur Vrs The quiet soul eroding stare of General Eisenhower
General Douglas MacArthur in the National Portrait Gallery here as a very dramatic, somewhat impressionist, painting, more lifelike to the top of the piece and much more abstract towards the bottomGeneral Eisenhower at the national portrait Gallery here depicted in a very life like style with what I can only describe as a quiet soul eroding stare
