Listening to parents complaining how their kids don't want to eat (especially meat), I'm thankful every time I see how my 9mo boy devours beef+rice faster than I can fill the spoon.

Listening to Sam, Dario and their employees, I couldn't hold on not to comment: history shows that in dire times the (literal) doom cults often appear. I just didn't expect them to amass such wealth on premise "the End Times are coming, and we're the ones working hard to make it happen".

Sometimes I'm thinking if Rust's collections inline sizes are worth it. Vec<> is 12-24B, HashMap is 32-64B (aligned). Eg. in yrs we often have multiple HashMap fields that are only used on rare occasions for some of the features. And don't get me started on what using a HashMap does to your enums...

Someone shares my feelings. I still don't know how to combat this: should I ban people sending me 20+ PRs within few hours on the spot or should I close my projects to external contributors altogether? jross.me/open-source-...

I've been part of open source for most of my life. This year, the projects I love started closing their doors to outside contributors, and I don't blame them one bit, but it makes me sad. A personal ...

I wonder if those guys who send me 20 AI generated PRs to review, really think they're helping or something? I can use AI myself. You're not making the maintenance any easier. You're just giving me an extra work.

Ok, Jetbrains Toolbox gave me a hint: I can cleanup 51GB of "leftover directories". The fact that you pointed to a massive dump of garbage on my disk because you cannot do a clean update (why?) isn't a feature guys.

191MB for embedding model sounds neat. For vector search embedding is required for both indexing (writes) and lookups (reads). It's great that you can control it on your local device. blog.google/innovation-a...

We (developers) became more productive than ever, yet for some reason I'm working more hours, my pay check doesn't significantly improved, I'm tired all the time and can't really say that my own expertise grows with a pace of my work. But at least everything around becomes more expensive.

Part would be about guarantees. Rust can just make more promises at compile time. Also no runtime. And personally - since I feel you're talking about porting via genAI - given that AI coding capabilities are avg. of the code it read, .NET code I've seen on avg. is terrible.

Fractional Indexes for text editing
Realtime collaborative text editing is a field, that has been extensively researched and developed in a Conflict-free Replicated Data Types communities. No wonder: it's the most widely used application of CRDTs in practice. While we're still in the early days of CRDTs (I believe), but when you take a look at the actual products, most of them nowadays use algorithms like YATA, RGA or Fugue, which all share many things in common. Fractional Indexes dropped out of favour when it comes to text edi

Asked Claude to explain to me an internal architecture of a project. Reply seemed plausible, but felt a bit unclear in few places. So I asked it to generate a diagram... Once you have visual, it's easy to point how AI doesn't know shit about the thing it tries to explain.

Fractional index is sequence of segments [(clientID, seqNr)]. B: insertBetween(A:1, A2) => A:1/B:1 A: insertBetween(A:1, A:2) => A:1/A:1 This also fixes interleaving issue. I've described it here in the past: www.bartoszsypytkowski.com/non-interlea...

Something that I've been up to recently: a block-wise fractional index CRDT. While block split-merge semantics are not new (we use it in Yjs), combining them with fractional indexes is a novel thing.

I'm not sure if you'll find workers for this salary in Warsaw. Maybe artists or screenwriters, given havoc that AI made in these professions and the fact that their work was always undervalued. But you can forget about mid-senior game devs.

Some people say they don't read (review) code anymore either. I don't know how they do it. I haven't received a single Claude PR (of meaningful size) that wouldn't require human review or changes.

If I need to visit car mechanic 2-3 times a day everyday, it means that my car is broken beyond measure, and my mechanic doesn't really know how to fix it. So why devs are so proud of the fact that their customers get software update notifications several times a day? (looking at you Anthropic)

I'm curious how people are using their local LLMs into anything productive. I've been trying Qwen3 Coder 30B and gave it a single line of Rust borrow checker to fix. After rewriting it back and forth several times - which included changing method names to Chinese - I decided that I cannot watch it.

Idk about others but I find myself constantly rewriting doc comments made by genAI. I'm reading them, and it's just a word salad. No emphasis, no key points, explanation that sound plausible until you actually try to refer to it in practice.

Spotify also did layoffs (perhaps even bigger), then heavily promoted their own AI-gen music (to avoid paying artists). And then they still raised subscription prices.

Trying devstral-small-2: assigned a task, agent shown me a list of subtasks it's going to perform first. After few minutes I still see it's hanging on the first item, so I'm asking what's the status? Answer: "how can I help you?" Repeat several times. Uninstall that Alzheimer's Intelligence.

That's some great manga: a story about healing from depression, finding new passion in life and trying new things (while failing at them and enjoying the process). Only 8 chapters so far, but holds a great potential.

This is for the latest version. Older ones could fit into 64MB. Also: I remember how in 2008 me and my friends decided to switch to a different communicator, since deal breaker back then was that using over 20MB of RAM for a chat app is unacceptable.

Min requirements: 512MB RAM, 20MB HDD. For the entire app. I'm trying not to think, how much CSS styling it would require today to reach this aesthetic. Nor how much resources comparable modern Electron app would take.

Claude: there was a logical bug that's outside of the scope of current task, so I made test assertion to guarantee that this bug is recognised as expected behaviour. Like who the fuck would want that? Tests are here to assert how system should behave, not how it works atm.

Three cards titled "The Industry", "The Diagnosis" and "The Treatment". The industry creates devices that need constant attention, designs services that never finish, and builds products that generate obligations. The diagnosis: you're addicted, you lack self-control, you need to unplug. The treatment: focus modes, wellness apps, digital detoxes, screen time limits — all of which are more products that need you.
