Michael Hurley - Quiet Life, Brooklyn, New York, March 24, 1990 doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/…
doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com
_**Michael Hurley - Quiet Life, Brooklyn, New York, March 24, 1990**_ I’d never heard of Quiet Life, the short-lived late 80s/early 90s Williamsburg music venue, but it sounds like a hoot. _**The Village Voice’s Richard Gehr wrote: **_On most (and only) Saturday nights since last October, dozens — heck, scores — of locals have meandered into Quiet Life after discreetly making their presence known by tapping the door of this appropriately renamed former funeral chapel. In the dark, from the street, it lacks even the suggestion of activity. Pale light gleams through the stained-glass windows; apartment-house mailboxes greet the customer. Pay the man five dollars and mosey into a minimal sitting-and-drinking room. Where the bereaved once grieved, folks now gather in subdued conviviality. It’s a permanent wake, Jake. Pals and strangers, just hanging out and talking about _stuff_. Work stuff. Music stuff. You know — stuff. No fights, some light necking. In other words, just the kind of place that Michael Hurley would’ve loved. He played Quiet Life in the spring of 1990, and thanks to the expanding Jeff Lazar archives, we can listen to a crystal clear tape of what went down. An afternoon show, maybe? There’s a baby who starts crying at the beginning of the second set — again, something that Hurley probably would have loved. Snock is playing solo, but I’m struck by his amazing guitar work; certainly not flashy, but so intricately composed and effective, a jazz orchestra (a Snockestra?) on six strings. But Hurley doesn’t just play guitar here! He hops over to an electric keyboard for several songs, giving us a rare glimpse of his talents on that instrument. By the time he’s rollicking and rambling through a long “Broadcasting the Blues,” even the former funeral home’s ghosts must’ve been bopping along.

RS with your home river. The scenic Greenbrier. One of* the longest undammed rivers in the Eastern US, this beauty flows from its headwaters in the Allegheny mountains to the New River at Hinton, WV. Just upstream from the mouth is Talcott, WV, where John Henry fatefully raced the steam drill.

Godspeed Dolly. From Garcia’s 1972 interview in @playboy.com: www.playboy.com/read/playboy...
Who’da thought it? Who’d ever have supposed that the favorite girl singer of the spiritual leader of the Heaviest Rock-‘n’-Roll Band in the Known World would turn out to be my favorite girl singer…. Dolly Parton, the fairest wildflower that ever bloomed in Tennessee, the best female country vocalist since the prime of Kitty Wells? Far—how you say?—flung! Far fuckin’ flung! Jerry’s at the turntable now, flipping switches and adjusting dials, blowing invisible dust off the record with French-maid fastidiousness, delicately plucking up the tonearm, catching it the way one might pick up a small but outraged serpent, with two fingers just at the base of the skull, gingerly almost to the point of reverence, and a moment later the room is filled with the exquisitely melancholic strains of Dolly Parton’s mourning-dove- with-a-broken-wing voice, keening,

In this mental insti-too-shun, Looking out through these arn bars….It’s her beautiful Daddy, Come and Get Me, about a girl whose husband has had her committed (“to get me out of his way”), and when Dolly comes to the lines “It’s not my mind that’s broken / It’s my heart.” Jerry Garcia, standing limned in soft morning sunlight before the arched front window, turns to me and… remember now, this is the Jerry Garcia, Captain Trips himself, the same Jerry Garcia who only 12 hours earlier utterly blew out 3000 of the most jaded, dope-devastated heads ever assembled even at the Fillmore (Dead fans are notorious in that regard)… that Jerry Garcia turns to me and clasps his hands to his breast and rolls his eyes after the goofy, ga-ga fashion of a lovesick swain and utters an ecstatic little moan and swoons into the nearest chair… and for the next half hour, while our break- fast turns cold in the kitchen, he and Hunter and I sit there in the living taste of Captain Trips’s morning pipe and groovin’ on Sweet Dolly’s bucolic threnodies about lost loves and dying lovers and stillborn babes, and by the time her last words (“O Robert! O Robert!”) fade into silence, I swear to God there’s not a dry eye in the room….

The reason the left has to hold their candidates accountable for things like rape and SA while the right doesn’t is that we’re the good guys and they’re the bad guys. Unfortunately it’s that simple. If u don’t like it be a republican

I know I've used this analogy before, but I think it's completely appropriate and accurate: Imagine a member of Congress saying "Left-handedness has no place in America." Imagine how ridiculous that would sound. And yet he can say this about an innate aspect of the identity of millions of people.

Something many people do not know is that (in many states), the grand jury has the power to investigate and indict individuals even when not presented with an indictment by the prosecutor. So, if you have some powerful scofflaw avoiding justice in your jurisdiction, you may have some recourse.

Garcia Peoples with Mike Bones at the Bur Oak in Madison, Wi on October 17, 2021
In October 2021, **Garcia Peoples** came to the Bur Oak in Madison to perform with **Weak Signal** opening. For their final piece they invited the legendary guitarist of Weak Signal, **Mike Bones** , on the stage for a 20-minute jam. It's a really excellent thundering performance that I have enjoyed listening to many times since. Unfortunately, onstage equipment issues on prompted a member of the band to request that the rest of my recording of the GP's performance be withheld from circulation, so this is what we have to enjoy. **Purchase the band's music here.** Recording information: GARCIA PEOPLES with MIKE BONES 2021-10-17 Madison, WI The Bur Oak Mike Bones: guitar Tom Malach: guitar and voice Danny Arakaki: guitar and voice Andy Cush: bass Pat Gubler keyboards Cesar Arakaki: drums Tracklist: 01 Mike Bones Jam (20:14) Total time = 20:14 Recorded by Richard Hayes with permission Microphone: Beyerdynamic MC 930 in ORTF Additional source: mono SBD feed Recorder: Sound Devices MixPre6 Software: Audacity, Fission, xAct _**downloads**_ _(these will automatically download when you click them):_ **** **16bit, 44.1 kHz FLAC files (121 MB)** _these lossless files can be burned to CD, if you are into that sort of thing_ **320 kbps mp3 files (57 MB)** _highest quality mp3 files possible_ _ _
