I was recently made aware of artist Algernon Newton. Although he was a painter of landscapes, (see Autumn Landscape, 1955, below) he's been dubbed The English Canaletto, as he also painted Venetian-like canalside scenes, such as The House by the Canal, and The Regent's Canal, both dated 1922.

Yayoi. ❤️
Installation by Yayoi Kusama where small multicoloured globes of light are reflected in a mirrored chamber, giving the impression of infinite space dotted with lights, like stars in space.

Dragon spring at Eiheiji temple (photo by @photo_okina)
Photographed by @photo_okina, this atmospheric image captures a moss-enshrouded dragon water spout nestled within the serene grounds of Eihei-ji (永平寺), the historic head temple of Sōtō Zen Buddhism in Fukui Prefecture. Embedded deep within the temple’s damp, cedar-shaded forest, the carved stone dragon head (ryū) appears to emerge organically from a cliff face blanketed in a thick mantle of emerald moss (koke) and delicate wild ferns.

In Buddhist iconography, dragons are revered as divine guardians of sacred waters and rain. Here, a steady, crystalline stream of mountain spring water pours continuously from the creature's open jaws, catching ambient light against the deep, velvety shadows of the stone. The heavy weathering of the relief—where centuries of moisture and plant life have softened its carved scales—epitomizes the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, reflecting the quiet, timeless stillness and deep integration with nature that defines Eiheiji’s sacred landscape.

The decommissioning of Jodrell Bank feels like the decommissioning of Alan Garner. No to disenchantment. Yes to re-enchantment and the filaments thereof. #Hookland

Today is full of magics. You don’t need to read about others experiences, you don’t need to capture your own to share. Today, just bathe in it all. Harvest your own omens, revel in whatever blessings the day offers. Refuse to be part of the mediated spectacle. Find your own primal wonder. #Solstice

Magical, if a tad hot, circular walk yesterday near Balcombe, mid Sussex, taking in farmland, a lake and cool wooded areas. So many butterflies. ❤️
A bright, sunlit grassy path stretches into the distance, with trees lining each side.Pools of sunlight fall on bracken in a forest.

Mount Fuji at sunrise
This vertical photograph captures a breathtaking and ethereal view of Mount Fuji at sunrise. The composition is perfectly symmetrical, centered on the snow-capped peak of Japan’s most iconic mountain as it rises above a low-lying layer of mist. The sky is filled with soft, sweeping clouds illuminated in a vibrant palette of violet, pink, and golden hues, which are mirrored with near-perfect clarity in the calm waters of the lake below.

In the mid-ground, a solitary small boat with a single figure stands out against the horizontal band of mist, adding a sense of immense scale and quiet solitude to the landscape. A small, forested island or peninsula sits just behind the boat, appearing to float upon the fog. This image emphasizes the spiritual and aesthetic significance of Mount Fuji, a subject that has inspired countless Japanese artists, from classical ukiyo-e masters to modern photographers.

The dreamlike quality of the light and the stillness of the reflection evoke a profound sense of harmony and peace. By capturing the mountain in such a transient, luminous moment, the photograph highlights the enduring beauty of the Japanese wilderness and its central place in the nation's cultural identity. This view is characteristic of the Fuji Five Lakes region, where the interaction between the mountain, water, and atmosphere creates some of Japan's most celebrated vistas.

I hit some part of my body - usually my head - on an inanimate object, and then hit said object with my hand as some kind of ‘revenge’, which only leads to both head and hand hurting. For god’s sake why do I do this?
