His friends are brilliant and hot, his mentors legendary, his penchant for branding...disturbing, his dog a beautiful hound, and his romantic life open to love (irl). To get to work editing Homodoxy's first manuscript, send out more contracts, build The Rearview, apply for grants, and woo large donors, he needs a base salary now. It takes a village to make a little queer press!IF YOU BELIEVE, become a monthly donor of Sio-$25 per month. He is aiming for a humble $2,16o a month in monthly donations ($2,000 after his fiscal sponsor's 8%) and is currently at $350.LINK IN BIO, darlings.

Two smiling people: a curly haired blond man with a floral vest with nothing on underneath it, but wearing a pearl necklace and holding a sandwhich, because he forgot to put it down, and a brunette woman with a red top with a design of black leaves and flowers. She wears purple and turquoise glasses and a red lip.The same woman sits in a sanctuary on a chair between a music stand and microphone and the altar. She reads from a piece of paper. She is wearing a the red top, a black skirt, and black pump boots.

It really makes you think. No text, just the slide of man sitting.Anyway, so for classes, I wrote essays on gay Christian celibates, Walt Whitman, some obscure poets and theologians.
And eventually, queer theology, and the place—often lack—of gay sex within it. The book begins with the most recent work (2020ish) and goes backwards.

Coarse Work: Essays in Theology and Gay Life
by Samuel Ernest, PhD
15% off for the month of JuneIt's a collection of essays I wrote as a student at Yale
Divinity School and Religious Studies. The gay Christian books I'd read told me to be celibate or married, and the novels I was reading weren't concerned with that hahaAnd here I was, a once deeply closeted gay figuring sexuality out at div school. Why were the novels and poems so much more interesting?
Why didn't gay Christian writers write about sex?

With absolutely crushing journal entries from @samuelernest.com's days in the closet while a student at a Christian college, 'Coarse Work: Essays in Theology and Gay Life' is also a great read for nosy bitches who don't mind their own business!
I slept next to him for the night until it was time for
church. Quest was awesome. Brenda Salter McNeil
preached about the prostitute who asked to be saved
from the Israelites when they were going to sack her city.
I felt no guilt about A—. I still don’t. I don’t know
what God thinks about it, but I’m treating it in the
same way I’ve gone through this whole fucking pro-
cess. Pray for guidance —> increase transparency —>
feel freer —> chalk it up to God working in my life.

Lots of queer theology books will tell you that being queer and being Christian mean the same thing! But they do not. LEARN WHY IN 'COARSE WORK: ESSAYS IN THEOLOGY AND GAY LIFE' by @samuelernest.com
By far, the most common provocations made by queer
theologians are that christianity is queer and has
always been queer! It even must be queer to be true
Christianity.7 Such claims are familiar enough. And by
now, critiques of such claims may be familiar enough,
or may not be! Many texts that make these arguments
have valuable insights, and many of these authors
have opened up new vistas for queer theology, but the
sheer volume of queer work in theology that agrees that
“queer = Christian” ought to give one pause…
Perhaps I have already divided my readers into two
camps: those who enjoy such claims and agree with
them, and those who have no use for them.
Those in either camp may be familiar with the work of Linn
Tonstad, who has written many a page critiquing these types of
statements. See the end notes for various citations of her work
throughout. Mark D. Jordan’s body of work—especially here,
“On Queer Theology Lost”—is also swimming in my head.
[Sections in smaller print comment on what comes before or,
as here, show my work.]
Does Christianity ever absorb a language, a discourse,
a theory, a people (!!!) without fundamentally changing
it?

Dear friend,
I hope you are well!
I am founding Homodoxy, a small press for gay/queer theology and literature, and I
write to ask for your help starting it. In a moment of increasing censorship and fear, we
need good writing about LGBTQ faith and sexuality to buoy our spirits, expand our
imaginations, and sustain queer life.
Too few books of queer spirituality go beyond tired debates about biblical support for
gay marriage, gay ordination, and trans people. Much writing from Christian presses
rehearses old arguments while ignoring the complexities of queer life and sexuality;
academic presses are beholden to the maintenance of academic fields and peer review,
which limit the risks their writers can take; and queer presses tend not to focus
predominantly on spirituality.
Homodoxy will build a home for writers beyond those limits. Inspired by gay
liberationist publishers and pietist tract distributors, Homodoxy will publish fables,
theology, essays, novels, devotionals, poetry, prayers, translations, and more. Our texts
will explore a niche in the market where spirit, sexuality, and craft meet to produce
thoughtful and daring queer writing.
Homodoxy is open to all genres, and its publishing program will feature two series:
1. Books Reprinted in Contemporary Contexts, or BRICC: BRICC reprints older,
out of-print, hard-to-find, and now expensive queer writing. Its name harkens
back with tongue in cheek to the iconic brick thrown at Stonewall. A briccis
foundational and projectile. We learn the past to break through present barriers
and build new futures. The BRICC series will resemble NYRB Classics in featuring
new introductions by writers, scholars, and artists that will frame the
republished or newly translated text.
I am in conversations with the estates of writers I admire and am reaching out to
others. I can’t send out contracts yet, but I hope to republish work by leatherman
Geoff Mains, the visionary lesbian poet Judy Grahn, Black pastor and queer
liberationist B…

The fundamentalist’s reduction of the Bible to surface prooftexts is of a piece with the transphobic Christian’s reduction of the human body to two genders dependent on two discreet kinds of sexual organs. Both are misreadings that further dull the senses.
