I’m skeptical that there’s any way to crack it until we know what causes consciousness in natural systems. The imputation of consciousness begins with our own indubitably experienced first-person consciousness and trades on the inference or instinct that biological beings “like us” have it too.

The yen to “anchor” psychology in “evolutionary theory” is so strange. We don’t see similar attempts in medicine, for instance, though the objects of medicine are likewise the products of evolution. The impulse seems ideological. Just do the science, informed by evolutionary theory when relevant.
