So many of the hot topics today, from socialism to cryptocurrencies to gender identity to polyamory, could simply be described as humanity waking up to the reality that all our rules were written by dead people long before we all got here, and that we are free to re-write them.

daily anti-capitalist affirmations via @liberatorywellness.bsky.social:

• I am tired because capitalism feeds + thrives on exhaustion, not because I'm weak.

• My debt is not a moral failure, it's the cost of a rigged system.

• My productivity does not define my humanity or self work.

• Rest will not dismantle capitalism, but it disrupts its grip on me.

• Poverty is manufactured & my struggle is not proof of laziness.

• I do not need to monetize every passion to justify my existence.

• Capitalism makes me feel disposable, community reminds me l am not.

• Saying "no" is not selfish, it's reclaiming my life from exploitation.

• I refuse to measure my healing in terms of efficiency.

#MentalHealth #Parenting #EliminateSelfBlame #BeKindToYourself #Child #ChildhoodTrauma #TraumaInformed #ParentingStyles #YouDeservedBetter

it can be therapeutic to admit "actually my childhood was deeply fucking awful." not "my parents tried" or "there were good times too" or "I was lucky in certain ways" but solely to acknowledge "I went though some fucking messed up shit what the fuck was that about "
biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

"my parents tried" other people's intentions don't excuse or erase your suffering. parents are expected to try, that's the bare minimum of being a parent, and it doesn't undo the consequences of failing to protect a tiny vulnerable human being.

"there were good times too" children are profoundly capable of joy, every person's childhood contains some measure of joy, childhood should be joyful, and none of that erases the lasting trauma of the shit you went through. your childhood isn't a math problem where the positives and negatives balance out towards some neutral zero, reality doesn't work like that.

"I was lucky in certain ways" and pretty fucking unlucky by the sound of it. ok so "things could have been worse" things could always be worse and they could always be better, that is a mundane and meaningless expression meant to make excuses for other people, and bitch it sure as thunder doesn't erase the fact that you walked through hell.

You. Deserved. BETTER.

Via @birdblogwhichisforbirds and @angstmonsterwrites, on Tumblr:

I cannot emphasize enough how much of a life hack it is to exclusively be friends with, date and marry people who are not constantly mean assholes to you.

angstmonsterwrites from Tumblr replies:

This may seem like basic common sense, but one interesting (and kind of terrifying) thing I recently read was that some individuals who grew up in an emotionally abusive environment find that their anxiety level actually decreases in the presence of those who are mean or overly critical of them because it's familiar. Their nervous systems are hard wired to react to that kind of treatment as "normal" in the sense that it knows what to do with it--what defense mechanisms to employ when, etc.

Meanwhile, kinder, more peaceful, and healthier relationships are quite a dramatic adjustment, and ironically feel less predictable because of all the threats that are absent and never materialize, It feels suspicious or too good to be true, which in turn ratchets up hypervigilance and hyper-arousal.

Instead of knowing what BS is coming because it always does, there's the nebulous sense that the other shoe is just waiting to drop. Safety and respect can feel the most unsafe for a while, because as far as the traumatized nervous system is concerned, those things don't exist, or If they do in any form, there must be a million unseen strings attached.

This is part of what traps a lot of people in abusive relationships, consistently draws them to want to please assholes, or keeps them moving from one unhealthy environment to the next-a highly toxic comfort of famillarity where being on the receiving end of cruelty feels like "home".

#SuicidePreventation #MentalHealth #Capitalism #Government #Antidepressants #Corruption #ChronicIllness #Individualism #Poverty #UnitedStates #Society

Suicide rates are absolutely going to continue to climb in the USA as long as our concept of "Mental Health" remains separated from material conditions.

Antidepressants can't cure poverty and alienation.

They cant cure the crushing pressure that comes with watching climate changing in real time, but feeling powerless because the government is too corrupt to care. They can't cure the many chronic physical health conditions people go without treatment for because the US physical health system is bullshit.

Always turning toward psychiatry for an answer is a perfect example of American style individualism killing people, because the problem is always said to exist in the individual's brain chemicals, and society is always innocent.

As the famous quote goes
"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."

I keep posting this, but it's from the 1917 trial of Margaret Sanger, a birth control activist. Still accurate 100 years later.

In the end, the judge ruled that no woman has "the right to copulate with a feeling of security that there will be no resulting conceptice:

If a woman isn't willing to die in childbirth, she shouldn't have sex."

The book is "The Secret History of Wonder Woman" if anyone is interested.

An excerpt from 'The Politics of Reality' (1983) by Marilyn Frye #feminism #MarilynFrye #Politics #Human
An excerpt from Marilyn Frye's book, 'The Politics of Reality.' (1983)

"To say that straight men are heterosexual is only to say that they engage in sex (fucking exclusively with the other sex, i.e., women).

All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men. The people whom they admire, respect, adore, revere, honor, whom they imitate, idolize, and form profound attachments to, whom they are willing to teach and from whom they are willing to learn, and whose respect, admiration, recognition, honor, reverence and love they desire... those are, overwhelmingly, other men.

In their relations with women, what passes for respect is kindness, generosity or paternalism; what passes for honor is removal to the pedestal. From women they want devotion, service and sex.

Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving."

I've seen the Ursula K LeGuin quote about capitalism going aroun but to really appreciate it you have to know the context.

The year is 2014. She has been given a lifetime achievement awar from the National Book Awards. Neil Gaiman puts it on her neck ir front of a crowd of booksellers who bankrolled the event, and it's t to make a standard "thank you for this award, insert story here, something about diversity, blah blah blah" speech. She starts off doing just that, thanking her friends and fellow authors. All is well.

Then this old lady from Oregon looks her audience of executives d in the eye, and says "Developing written material to suit sales strategies in order to maximize corporate profit and advertising revenue is not the same thing as responsible book publishing or authorship."
She rails against the reduction of her art to a commodity producer only for profit. She denounces publishers who overcharge libraries their products and censor writers in favor of something "more profitable". She specifically denounces Amazon and its business practices, knowing full well that her audience is filled with Amazor employees. And to cap it off, she warns them: "We live in capitalis Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings.

Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the of words."

Ursula K LeGuin got up in front of an audience of some of the mos powerful people in publishing, was expected to give a trite and politically safe argument about literature, and instead told them directly "Your empire will fall. And I will help it along."

I want to draw especial attention to the treatment of Al

#AI #ArtificialIntelligence

-artificial intelligence-in these narratives. Think of Ex Machina or Blade Runner. I spoke at TED two years in a row, and one year, there were back-to-back talks about whether or not Al was going to evolve out of control and "kill us all." I realized that that scenario is just something I have never been afraid of. And at the same moment, I noticed that the people who are terrified of machine super-intelligence are almost exclusively white men. I don't think anxiety about Al is really about Al at all. I think it's certain white men's displaced anxiety upon realizing that women and people of color have, and have always had, sentience, and are beginning to act on it on scales that they're unprepared for. There's a reason that Al is almost exclusively gendered as female, in fiction and in life.

There's a reason they're almost exclusively in service positions, in fiction and in life. I'm not worried about how we're going to treat Al some distant day, I'm worried about how we treat other humans, now, today, all over the world, far worse than anything that's depicted in Al movies. It matters that still, the vast majority of science fiction narratives that appear in popular culture are imagined by, written by, directed by, and funded by white men who interpret the crumbling of their world as the crumbling of the world.

i dont know how to articulate this well but some of you act like neurodiversity starts with adhd and ends with autism. you talk about "the neurodivergent experience" and everytime you mean "the overlapping experience of adhd and autism."

please remember us when talking about neurodiversity. ocd, dyslexia, dyscaculia, personality disorders, tourettes, intellectual disabilities, schizo-spec disorders, etc. all fall under neurodiversity.

please stop saying neurodivergent when you mean "autism and adhd."

from glorious-spoon on Tumblr:

the weirdest thing about a lot of the common criticisms of millennials i see is that they all seem to boil down to:

you are soft. you belleve the world should be kind. you expect people to treat you fairly, you think your needs are important, that you deserve to be listened to, that you shouldn't be hungry and frightened and in pain.
and people are seriously SO OFFENDED by this.

like, how dare you. how dare you believe the world might be a good place, how dare you believe you should be treated well just for existing. life is pain, princess, anyone who tells you different is selling something, now wipe that smile off your face, shut your mouth and go suffer like i did.

and it's just like... I have a kid. If she grows up expecting better treatment than i experienced as a young woman, I'm doing my job. i know the world isn't perfect, but random crueity isn't something we should just shrug our shoulders and accept, and it's so fucking weird how angry people get at youngsters who refuse to do just that.

This is why groceries and food are political.
By Tumblr user Laeffy

Every time I get groceries I'm always appalled at how little you can get for like, $20. I was making banana pudding so I needed vanilla wafers but the brand name nilla wafers cost $4 a box. The minimum wage in my state is $7.25/hr. My friend put it really well when he said "imagine you work for an hour and someone hands you two boxes of nilla wafers and said 'actually this is a bit more than what I owe you'"

How are some of y'all missing the point so bad.
"Shop at aldi instead" "make your own food" "don't buy brand name" "don't buy unhealthy processed food" It's not about the box of cookies. This is about how minimum wage pays peanuts and has stagnated for 12 years while the cost of living keeps growing. No one wants your financial advice about how to survive on beans and rice and frozen veggies. The smartest grocery list in the world is not gonna help you budget your way out of poverty. Please get a grip for the love of god

via Tumblr user (deactivated) sweetschizo. I read this aloud to an audience of 50 or so people at a poetry event who probably consider themselves allies of the mentally ill but still use "mentally ill" as a catchphrase for things that are not the purview of mental illness. I will challenge that.
Tumblr post from user: sweetschizo

"Are you saying that murderers are right in the head??"

No there's definitely something wrong with someone's way of thinking if they can justify killing innocent people, but this doesn't necessarily mean that they have a mental illness.

Extremist beliefs isn't a mental illness.
Bigotry isn't a mental illness.
Entitlement isn't a mental illness.
Hate isn't a mental illness.
Having a dysfunctional moral compass isn't a mental illness.

We need to stop categorizing all these things as some undefinable "mental illness" and start looking at what we do as a society to develop and justify these things to a degree where people use them to justify killing.

Tweet from UrsulaV, who is TKingfisher on Bluesky.

She tweets: If you're ever feeling guilty about not cooking a fresh home-cooked meal, a reminder that people in cities historically either had cooks or ate at food stalls, going back to Ancient Greece. Ancient Egypt, too, although since everybody ate bread, beer, and onions, less of a thing.

[The rest of this is in a different font, but I think it's still her words and not an image she's quoting?]

It's a weird quirk of our obsession with nuclear families that everybody is expected to have time, skill, and equipment to cook daily and that if you're a woman, particularly, you are a lesser person if you aren't casually able to cook every day with random fresh ingredients.

Don't buy into that. People since forever have hired cooks, gone to inns, lived in extended families where it wasn't always your turn to cook, or ate such simplified diets that it was less of an issue.

You haven't failed at a normal human task, you have been sold an unrealistic expectation and told it was a normal human task. Go get takeout. Or beer, bread, and onions. Eat cheese and some dates. Relax.
